Title: Joystick Help for first project
Post by: starwarsfan54321 on December 25, 2011, 12:16:01 pm
Just got some christmas money and I am planning on ordering some parts for my cabinet I hope to build over the spring and summer, my main question is what would be better -
Mag Stick plus
Happ Competition
Paradise Led Joystick

Its really a matter of taste, what games you plan on playing and what's your budget.
For 8 way games, I like competitions.

The main games i will be playing are-
Street Fighter and other fighting games
194X Series
Pacman
Galaga
Donkey Kong Jr
Donkey Kong
Gaplus etc.
The budget just needs to be under $40 for two joysticks

I would consider any of these 3
all arcade production sticks (used in actual machines)
all are good all rounders each with a unique selling point:

Sanwa JLF - best for fighting games, esp street fighter

Sanwa JLW - maybe the best all rounder with easy to switch 4/8 way - very good feel for 4 way games

Seimitsu LS32 - my preferred stick, excellent for shmups and games that require precise movements - comes with a 3 way gate (2 way 4 way and 8 way)

Not sure if they fit quite within your budget, but much better to have a quality product than regret skimping later on.

I would not use a Mag Stick Plus on a CP used for fighters.  It is a great switchable joystick but I do not think you would be happy with the feel of it for playing fighters.  I would get 2 8 ways of any type you are comfortable with and a dedicated 4 way for your classic games.

Just to add some clarification, I can only have two joysticks, machine will be using jamma harness for a multiboard.
Thanks for the responses

If you are using a multibard then the magstick plus is a good fit for it as most are 4 way games.  If you are using a xxxx multiboard then the 2 regular joysticks and 1 dedicated 4 way are still an option as the 4 way is just connected to the same connections as the first 8 way.

For me personally I didn't care for the feel of the magsticks. I have tried out a lot of joysticks through out the years, right now my favorites are the Seimitsu LS32 or the Sanwa JLW.

If you definitely must only have 2 joysticks because of cp room or something, then maybe the Sanwa Jlw or the Seimitsu is you best choice.
I use the JLWs and I'm very happy with them.

Just to give you some ideas on options: What I have is a Sanwa Jlw for player 1, which has a circle gate (restrictor) so its dedicated 8-way and I use the cherry switches that are typically used in Happ Supers (less clicky). I currently have a JLW for player 2 that has the 4-way, 8-way restrictor but I plan on trying out the Omni2 from Groovy Game Gear which looks like a JLW with a knub on the restrictor for easy switching between 4 and 8 way.

Remember, with switchable sticks, you will need to access underneath for switching, unless you use the magstik plus. Personally I have heard a lot of complaints about that stick, but everyones taste is different.

I am using Happ Super Joysticks for my project.  You should consider them.  (I think they are better than the Competitions)
