Title: Wanted- Forgotten Worlds or Arkanoid spinners.
Post by: thechop on December 20, 2011, 01:32:02 pm
Hi there, looking for some of these, I understand the FW ones are almost impossible to find but am hoping the Arkanoids may be findable.
Understandably I'm new here but have often browsed this site with interest but only have just drifted into these waters properly as this type of hardware's your field of knowledge.
Noticed FrancoB's a regular he hopefully may have a good word for me.
If anyone can help me out that'd be great, or indeed know of another alternative I could use aswell.
Have searched a fair bit but most seem to be mame type spinners(USB?)
Link to AO feedback case it's needed.

I'm no expert, but I know a lot of people build cabinets to play these games using GroovyGameGear's TurboTwist High-Low spinner or Apache Control's Blackhawk.  It seems like, if you're connecting them to an actual Forgotten Worlds machine instead of a MAME PC you could just get one of the "slave/secondary" versions that doesn't include a USB encoder.

To that end, I've also read about people using a Happ optical rotary stick to play Forgotten Worlds, though I'm not sure I can visualize how (I guess you'd use the rotary control to turn your player with stick centered and, eg, hold the stick up to turn your weapon -- feels weird).  Anyway, I guess that's a possibility.

Speaking of which, you could theoretically use a standard spinner control and replace the joysticks with a "top-fire" model.  You could then hold the fire button down to aim your weapon?

They aren't too cheap, but it seems like the push-pull spinners are going to make you the happiest (outside of finding an actual OEM part, of course).

Hi there thanks for that, my investigations have led me to believe it seems the Happ rotary and the Apache ones do not have the same 'gear ratio' as the original Forgotten Worlds/Arkanoid spinners apparently a whole turn on one of those will only turn the weapon/player a very small amount so will work(as I originally had plans for them)but not effectively, so an Arkanoid spinner and a button stick( I heard someone used a pedal for fire)are perhaps the easiest route other than obviously original spinners.

Found an Arkanoid spinner and seems to do the job quite well, this is purely a rotation test hence the little bit of tape on the spinner to show the rotational turn.
