Title: Holiday Movies... with a Bang
Post by: Le Chuck on December 10, 2011, 09:59:58 pm
It's that time of year again and we're about to be overrun with Christmas movies.  That said there are a few gems in there that are classic perennials:  Christmas Story, It's a Wonderful Life, Christmas Vacation, to name a few of my favs but there is a genre of movies that are Christmas films but fly under the radar of the regular Christmasy crowd.

Christmas and GUNS!

My family's favorite is Die Hard, because using holiday packing tape to strap a Beretta 92F to one's back is just entirely badass.  Any other awesome Christmas shoot'em ups out there?

Lethal Weapon takes place around Christmas, the opening song to the movie is even Jingle Bell Rock.

Let's not forget the combination of America's two favorite action stars.....Arnold and Sinbad in "Jingle All the Way".  ;D

Ok, nevermind, let's try to forget it completely.

(Actually, it's not terrible, but it's not really good, either....)

Trapped In Paradise with Nicolas Cage, John Lovitz, and Dana Carvey.  Three bank robbers on the lamb on Christmas Eve.  Also, who can forget Bad Santa.

We showed Bad Santa on the plywood projector screen we setup on the HESCO wall in our FOB in Afghanistan for Christmas last year.  Our Colonel hadn't seen it before and sprayed Dr. Pepper through his nose when Billy Bob is giving it to the big girl in the fitting room... good times

Should have shown Badder Santa.   It's even worse.   :applaud:

The Grinch with J.C. is a definite family movie for us every year.

As well as some of the others...Vacation, Jingle All The Way & Elf too.

I haven't seen Badder Santa.  I didn't even know such a thing existed.  Can't wait!

Elf is a movie that my kids watch all year round.  Every time we go to the city they always point and say "The yellow ones don't stop!"

It's just the unrated cut of Bad Santa.

The Long Kiss Goodnight. Not as good as Die Hard though.

Damn, beat me to it, that, and Die Hard. Love those movies, especially around Christmas. I love Christmas Vacation, thats probably my all time favorite.

Scrooged is good, with Bill Murray, not exactly your traditional Christmas movie, but it has the feel good vibe at the end.

Haha The Long Kiss Goodnight... That was actually a pretty good flick. I think if they had got someone besides Geena Davis, that would have been a better movie.

The part that makes me laugh everytime is when the dogs come in and eat the turkey and the dad screams at them "sons of bitches!!! Bumpases!"

No wonder you are the way you are. It all makes sense now...  ;)

You should watch it, its a classic. A ton of things reference it. Its one of those movies you need to see.

I always like The Santa Clause with Tim Allen.  I remember seeing that when it first came out and I think it holds up well over time.  The Biography channel had a special about it last night that was really interesting.

TBH, I'm not a fan of A Christmas Story.  I've seen it a couple of times and to me, it's just an ok movie.

I really love most Christmas movies or even somewhat Christmas related movies. Here are some of my must see Christmas themed flicks.

It's a Wonderful Life
Scrooged
Miracle on 34th street
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1960's cartoon of course)
A Christmas Story
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
White Christmas
Joyeux Noel
The Santa Clause
Home Alone (and to a lesser degree, Home Alone 2)
The Muppet Christmas Carol
Earnest Save's Christmas (OK, OK, this is a guilty pleasure, I am a kid of the 80's though.)
Batman Returns
Gremlins

Atta boy Vigo! Got some good movies on that list! I would like to add a couple of my personal favorites in conjunction with yours. You have most of my favorites too (Not Ernest though, youre on your own  ;)) so I wont repeat any. Gremlins is a good one, I forgot about that one... I think Im gonna watch that one this year.

Elf
Die Hard
Lethal Weapon
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (I love me some good stop motion)

I think you got all the main ones though. Good job.

Haha, I know Ernest saves Christmas is definitely not a good film from an objective standpoint, but I can't help but enjoy how cheesy it is.  :D

Rudolph the Red nosed reindeer is awesome as well, I remember as a kid thinking that that Cornelius the prospector was pretty much the coolest guy ever.

Good stuff indeed! I dont really think you can go wrong with a christmas movie anyway, even with Ernest.

Dude. I laugh everytime he comes on screen, just the way he yells, and how hokey the animation is, even though its super dated, thats what I love about it.  :)

Same here. That and when Schartz's mom beats the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- out of him over the phone even though he didn't do anything.

The only problem with Rudolph is that it makes Santa look like a douchbag.

Santa has a big issue with Rudolph's nose.

Now that the "Bang" isn't as important, I'll have to put Trading Places into the mix. Funny Eddie Murphy, boobs, etc.

It does have Dan Aykroyd in a Santa suit waving a gun around, so it's a little bit into the "bang" category :P

Waving a gun around is closer to bang than Jamie Curtis is to boobs.

Then how can you forget Tim Burton's classic Nightmare Before Christmas.  It's a Christmas extravaganza, filmed one painstaking frame at a time.

Anybody ever see the Life and Times (Adventures?) of Santa Claus, also claymation, where Santa defeats the Auguaws and the Great Ak bestows the mantel of immortality on a dying Claus... trippy flick.  Good stuff though

Holy ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---! Good call Le Chuck! I dont know how I could have forgot that one. Shame on me... Seriously, I LOVE that movie! Especially Danny Elfman as the voice of singing jack, makes the songs awesome.

No MST3k Love?

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

I quite love Xmas horror movies as well so silent night deadly night is a great film :)
Here is the synopsis i'll hide it cause I'm sure there aren't many people who would watch a horror movie for Christmas  >:D
A young boy watches his parents killed by a thief in a Santa suit. He spends his youth in an orphanage, staying quietly to his self, but his mind is further bent by an ironhanded Mother Superior. He finally gets a job at a local store, where he finally snaps when he is required to wear a Santa suit, and goes on a killing spree that leads him slowly back to the orphanage.

Doesn't Lee Majors and Santa use machine guns on terrorists in Scrooged?  Later Bob Cat owns Bill ---smurfing--- Murray with a shotty, I forgot what a gun-fest Scrooged was.  Gotta love this time of year.

Yup, and during the Scrooged promo that Bill Murray makes, a dude blasts someone in the face (implied) with a shotgun too.

"Merry Christmas Frankie Angel."  :lol
