I was always long inspired by the thread Non-Mame games for arcade cabs (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=81557.0) to create a new list of games that would be appropriate for an arcade cab. following the discussion in the Free roms? (Not illegal ones) (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=116127.0) threads, I felt now would be a good time to kickstart this list.
I'm hoping this list can serve as a definitive list of PC games that would look and feel appropriate for a mame style arcade cabinet. None of these games are linked with the intention to be some sort of full replacement for mame and the use of roms. I encourage forum members to help by posting links to freeware games.

I would say, 2d Arena platformer/shooter.... it is like Mario Bros (arcade) meets Contra.

Thanks for this. These are soem pretty cool games, I wasn't aware of at least half of them.

Excellent post!
Agreed. The indie/freeware scene is putting out a lot of games that draw from the arcade/early console days. Good time to be a fan of games! Thanks for the list!
-
thanks everyone. Have lots more to post. just need to come up with good descriptions for all of them. may also separate them in to genres.
Again, if anyone knows of some cool freeware arcade style games. feel free to post them here.

Check out Spacebirdz (sort of a Phoenix remake), a project that was never finished, but what is there is a lot of fun.

Great list!
They might be more patterned after later Arcade games but many of the doujin games work quite nicely on a cab (possibly with the help of AutoHotkey in some cases).
There's are thread about some of them here

Big thanks popsicle. I have added all of the games you listed except for Spacebirdz. Unfortunately that link is not the official website and does not contain a download. I did find the official site and unfortunately it has been removed. :(

Unfortunately the authors of the doujin games have removed most of the games. The few that are available are now commercial titles. :(
I have added a few more and separated them in to genres. Not sure if they are all in their appropriate section and/or whether i should make a few more sections there.

Really, I hadn't gone looking in a year or so. That's unfortunate. Then again, some of those games were almost good enough to be considered commercial (I'd have preferred to see better input support, like for gamepads or sticks, before I'd call them fully commercial grade).

Streets of Rage remake: http://www.bombergames.net/sorr_project/ (http://www.bombergames.net/sorr_project/)
Based on a console game, but I don't see where the gameplay differs from an arcade beat 'em up.

Yes I am aware of the SOR remake. Unfortunately they received a takedown notice by sega some time back in september. The game is no longer available. :(
