Title: Kindle Fire- Anyone getting one?
Post by: Red on November 15, 2011, 12:53:20 pm
I have an Amazon GC that expires soon and was thinking about getting one.  I do wish it had a bigger screen though.  Anyone else considering getting one?

No.

It's always strange to me to hear about gift cards expiring since I in California where they never expire.

you can add the value of an Amazon gift card to your account and it will be there until you decide to spend it.

Worrying about an Amazon GC expiring is as ridiculous.

Almost as ridiculous as buying a device that’s a combination of a Kindle (minus E-Ink) and a tablet (minus apps).

For $100 less you can buy a real Kindle. For a $100 more you could by a real tablet. For $0 you can hold onto the value of the card until you actually need/want to buy something off of Amazon.

No.

I have my Hannspad that beats that Amazon crap to a pulp, or any Amazon device for that matter.

Even my Nook Classic looks sexier, and reads books too.  Bonus.  :woot

I bought a Kindle and took it back after 2 hours.  The dumb thing doesn't read epubs = worthless.  ;D

I can see the attraction for a $199 7 incher, but I would get a Galaxy Tab7 instead.

I do like the looks of it but I love my original Galaxy tab better so no but I would wait till xda have a good copy of android running but the new samsung 7' tab is a better option I think.

That is my current position -- my old Kindle is dead, but I loved reading on it and I have an iPad, so don't need another tablet.

I think maybe I'll go back to the old school instead of getting a Fire, but .... oh look, something shiny!

No, the appeal of the Kindle is the e-ink display.

I use a real kindle for reading, and a nook color for web browsing/videos/apps.  It's a great combination, because the color tablets suck for reading and e-ink is good for nothing but reading.

Speaking of the new Nook Color Tablet, how does it compare to the original Nook Color? and the Kindle Fire?

Anyone have a breakdown of the cost of apps/books/etc?  It seems most kindle books are around $9.  Is there a better way to get e-books cheaper?  Otherwise, would it just be worth going to your local library or buying the books used online for dirt cheap?

I've thought about getting something like this, but it seems like the price would add up and take away from money I could be spending on arcade or other hobbies :)

This is how I feel about it. I was going to buy a book for the kindle app I have on my phone, but it would cost more than buying the paperback new.

Off topic...

I mentioned buying some used books for a beach trip I was about to take. My friend got all weird about it and told me he never buys used books. I asked why and he explained that the only time (other than on a beach while on vacation) he reads a book is when he's taking a poop.

The thought of used books weird’s me out too.

...and now that I’m thinking about it, used kindles are starting to weird me out too.

All I know is that everyone hated the fire when it was called the Blackberry Playbook...

Why? Are people wiping their asses with the pages from these books?

We still hate the playbook, but will reconsider when they put android on it and drop the price to $200.

$200 is definitely the right price point, but I can't see getting a "tablet" that doesn't have full android market.  I read that the Fire can install from other sources so it might be possible to download first and install manually but that's just another step.

I am really enjoying my Dell Streak 7. (which I bought for $200)

My mom wants a tablet so I'm keeping my eyes out.

Edit: If the UI is friendly enough it still might be a good option for the somewhat technophobic. I haven't decided if it's a pro or a con that the device is geared wholly toward selling content on Amazon.

It's already been rooted, so the android marketplace will probably be added before long.

Not that I would care.  Since Amazon launched their own marketplace and their free app of the day, I don't get anything from the google market anymore.
