Title: Steam Account hacked
Post by: ark_ader on November 11, 2011, 12:30:34 pm
I just got a message via Steam from Valve (the online game library/shop) that they got hacked.

If you have used a credit card or debit card on their system, I would advise checking your bank statements or cancelling your cards.

I just cancelled all my bank cards, especially now nearing Christmas you do not need this type of grief, especially if someone has your details.

I do not know how many of you buy direct from Steam, but I hope you act on this and protect yourself.

 Read it here (http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/steam-hack-confirmed-by-valve-game-company/2011/11/11/gIQAfw3FCN_story.html)

Nope. No message here. Maybe you should enter all your info into that e-mail you got so the can verify your account. Or don't. I don't remember.

I've only ever used Paypal to buy stuff through steam, so no problem here :)

I also did not get an email, but thats probably because I only use paypal.

Not sure if your doubting the authenticity of the message the OP received...

Valve's Steam was hacked.  If you had any information in their system, it IS compromised, including your CC info (though it was still encrypted).  As suggested, you should act now.  Ounce of prevention, guys.

Fortunately in my case, the credit card into they had on file was for an out-dated card. I had not even realized that Steam retained CC info. The only Steam purchase I've ever made was a $5 copy of Day of Defeat. I don't recall any boxes saying "Keep my info" when I made the purchase. It irritates me when companies keep this information.

Not sure where you are getting that from.  The article quoted says the steam forums were hacked:
“We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked”

Do you have another link stating they actually compromised CC and/or personal info?

"This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information."

"We don't have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely."

Sorry, guess I should've referenced the article I read, and it looks like Atom found the same article.
