Title: Groovy Arcade Linux doesn't work with Radeon 9200 PCI
Post by: mazinger-z on November 10, 2011, 05:34:40 pm
Hello, I tried the ISO (both 32 bit and 64 bit versions) with a Radeon 9200 PCI (Vendor 1002, Device 5960, Subsystem 1051196, Rev. 01) and it didn't work. The system boots into a nice interlaced menu, but when I try to make the video setup or to start the front-end, I get an error.
Here is the log (I'm not a Linux user but managed to mount the floppy drive and get the log on a disk):

I also tried with an integrated GeForce 6150SE, but couldn't get past the menu, because only the top half of the menu was visible, due to black horizontal lines interleaved with the normal lines.
An ATi Rage PCI did work, but it always gave a signal >= 31KHz.

Please keep updating this wonderful project.

Hi,

I have the same problem with 2012.06.09-i686, tested on two Intel integrated graphics cards and one ATI Radeon HD 2600 (AGP) card  - received the "no screens" error each time. I only managed to get it work (sort of) on my laptop with an nVididia GeForce GT 330M, but only if I select "SVGA" as monitor type.

Is it maybe required to make some configurations changes in order to get this to work at least on the Radeon card?

Anyway, thanks for the great effort. Once this works fully, connected to my huge old Grundig TV set to get the true 15 kHz modes, I will be sure to make a donation!

Hi,

The Intel cards won't work, that's a fact. However it should work with your HD 2600, just make sure to try both outputs, DVI and VGA, from the live-cd boot menu, to force the right output.

Many thanks, I will try different outputs on the Radeon as suggested and post again with the results. Keeping my fingers crossed!  :)

Hello, I confirm radeon works, must be configured again xorg video section, or delete the file and re-configured from gasetup.

- Number of transistors (millions): 36
- 0.15um technology
- 128MB 64-bit DDR

After fiddling around for awhile I have reached some progress with the Radeon (HD 2600) card.

I can get X to start up properly but then advmenu dies immediately due to an "illegal instruction". Then X comes back down again so at first this looked like it was an X problem.

Turns out I'm not the only one having this problem:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,117334.msg1298620.html#msg1298620 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,117334.msg1298620.html#msg1298620)

If I manually replace advmenu with groovymame in the .xinitrc file, MAME will start up and seems to work - except that in the MAME main menu keyboard response is very sluggish.

(Just for fun I tried to select Wah!Cade as the front-end but nothing happened, am I doing something wrong?)
