OK, just for fun: Donkey Kong II was a hit, so what other arcade titles would you love to see a creative hack for? Here's mine-
1. Robotron 2085- the exact same as Robotron 2084, only 2 player (for all those folks who have a Smash TV/Total Carnage setup).
2. A version of Joust where a power up lets you ride the pterodactyl. Ride. The. Pterodactyl. And different level setups, beyond the disappearing platforms (but not like Joust 2-blah).

New maps for Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man.

I know this has been mentioned before, but Gyruss modified for spinner controls.

There are a ton of these in MisfitMame. ;)

Super SF2 Turbo with american names/win quotes/free-play but japanese AI. although i've heard its 'out there'

I'm curious, how is the AI in the Japanese Super SF2 Turbo different?

Completely agree with this. I would think someone could do it without too much trouble. Basically just take the ai and throw it into the American version. I know nothing about that stuff but i would love to see someone else do it.
The difference between the Japan ai and American ai is that the American ai for the most part just sits and waits for you to make a move and then they counter you. Very much like playing master in umk3. Opponent just sits waits for you to make a move and then nails you. Makes playing the game against the computer boring and pointless.

Are there roms for Hydro Thunder?

Thats been done, but if you could modify Star Castle to use spinner controls, I'd love it.

I just thought of a good hack. Fatalities, blood and awesome announcers voice incorporated into street fighter 2.
Street fighter is the far better fighting game but there is always something about the "darkness" of the mortal kombat series that keeps drawing me and my friends in for more.

That's more of a conversation piece.
I don't think DKII was that great.

Mario coming too late in any SMB title, only to find out Peach is becoming snack lunch of Bowser. The only thing I never liked about the Mario franchise: Peach being a selfish uncareful ---smurfette---.

Yeah, Rom Check Fail is worth a play, though, and a funny concept.
I agree on DKII... but, I do like the concept of making new levels, etc. while keeping it all era-accurate with the games resources, etc. Would love to see more along the same lines.

Cool thanks, all this time I was not aware of any difference. Will have to check it out.

I'm not much of a hacker myself, but I would think it wouldn't be that difficult for a hacker to do if it was approached from the other direction - hack the Japanese rom to look like the American game. Wouldn't it just be a straight up text hack, or are their other differences I'm not aware of? I'm thinking hacking the text in a rom would be fairly straight forward for any experienced hacker. Heck, I might be inclined to take a crack at it myself if I ever have the free time.

No freeplay that way :( if you do some mucking around use the phoenix roms, I have a spare grey ST board I wouldn't mind chucking a hacked rom on

Your probably right it would make more sense to just take the text from after battle etc from the american version and throw it in the japan version. Another thing that would have to be changed would be the names of the boss characters as they were switched around from american to japan.

Which version do you need phoenixed to get both free play and non crappy AI? But then I think you get some wierd glitch during the demo or something.
The l337 hax0red Japan one.
Not seen any attract mode glitches on mine.
although it sounds like it might still have jap names/win quotes...

In The Hunt and Metal Slug 2 with the crazy hardware slowdown removed.

Amen. But wasn't Metal Slug X basically 2 slightly modified and with the slowdown improved? Or is it too different?
Just got the PSX version of In the Hunt- fun game, lots of slowdown there, too, though.

How about the X-men arcade game with the graphics modified to reflect the 90's tv show instead of that crappy 80's pilot?
Apparently this hack exists, but I've yet to see it.
Sounds from the xmvsf games as well as those use the vioce actors from the cartoon.
-
I would love to see Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 with Johnny Cage, Rayden, Baraka, Rain, Chameleon, and Khameleon added to it - basically an arcade version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy. I would assume that would be very difficult and maybe even impossible though. :(

Pryde of the Xmen isnt THAT bad, well cept wolverines voice and the lame plot. The animation is pretty great for when it was made.

I don't think it would be impossible. There is a very popular hack of the sega genesis umk3 port that has added several characters. Mind you I know that the ports are totally different, but it probably means that mk's code is setup so that characters can be added.

ROM hacks for new games, or ROM hacks like what I did for Tripleship Galaga?
-
I'd love to see rom hacks for all games that lack a screen flip dip switch. I would then get them burned to eproms and put them on my PCB's so I won't have to yoke flip my cabinet to play Gemini Wing etc.
