Title: Anyone here running N64 / Project 64 in thier cabinet?
Post by: Dragonman73 on November 02, 2011, 03:42:05 pm
If so how do you have the control panel configured. The standard N64 controller has over 13 buttons I think. Is there a way I can get by with 8 buttons per player?

Advice or input

Thanks

Map Z as a combination of two buttons and combine analog/digital input?

I have it on mine but was just going to do Mario Kart 64 and maybe a few other racer type games.  They are simple.  1 button for gas, 1 to shoot.  I never use the brake.

I think 8 buttons per player will be plenty. If you don't count the control pad (probably 99% of the time it has the same function as the analog stick or is not used at all), there are only 9 buttons, and I'll bet 99% of games either didn't use the L button or it had the same function as the Z button.

As for configuring it, I would think it's very game dependent. Unfortunately, Project 64 does not allow different controller assignments for different games (unless it's been updated, I haven't checked in awhile). A couple of workarounds though: You could try to find a key assignment set that works ok for most of the games which do not allow you to customize controls, and then customize the controls and save in the games that do. Alternatively, you could customize controls using autohotkey scripts.

EDIT: Fixed a typo that made it really unclear what I was saying about the L and Z buttons.

We do with a 6-button layout. By default we map for a single player setup, using some of player 2's buttons for lesser used controls. It's very difficult to find a medium so what you may need to do is think carefully about the games you want to play then map the best for those. If you have to do without, I'd say the c-buttons are used the very least (they're usually just for camera angles) and just map the analog stick to your digital joystick as the d-pad was usually only used for menus or as an alternative to the analog stick. Using this thesis we map for 4-player games quite easily.

I've been looking into the same idea but decided to just go with xbox 360 controllers and have a sort of hidden usb port for them.

A 360 controller does works nicely, at least with project64. But some N64 games just don't feel right on a 360 controller (mainly shooters for me). If you want to use controllers instead of 360 controllers you could get a hub for N64 controllers.  The ones I've seen are built for 1 or 2 controllers.  Using N64 controllers would save the hassle of mapping buttons for different games.

Mapping is a pain in the   Do what I did was buy a USB to N64 adaptor.

$25 and your good to go.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I really wanted to use the arcade controllers since the player would be standing in front of them. I think for right now I'm gonna forgo the N64 idea.

You could just setup a few games that are amenable to being in a cabinet and using arcade controls.

+1 especially if your cp only has digital controls - many games will be borderline unplayable in that case anyway. I would think the best games to play on a cab would be racers (believe it or not, these can be pretty playable with digital controls if you tweak things just right) fighters, and sports games.
