Title: Adding a control panel to a control panel?
Post by: equlizer on October 27, 2011, 01:22:20 am
I recently got an apache push\pull spinner and a trackball.  I def do not have enough room on my current control panel (its a 2 player bartop)  I was thinking about just making another cp with those 2 things in it and when not in use, just sit it up top the bartop.  Or should i try and build onto the existing cp?

Fitting a Trackball and spinner on that? Nah

I think your better off building a new panel. I hope you used latch clamps or some sort of hardware like that for your CP insted of screws or glue so it's easy to swap.

Or better yet, maybe start a whole new bartop project for trackball/spinner games.

I mean why not? A 4' sheet of ply or MDF, a small LCD monitor and computer off craigslist maybe, and a few other tiny compnents. Shouldn't run you up too much huh?

Pimp my bartop :)  what I meant was to build a seperate cbup that sits in my lap or something?  I would put the spinner and trackball and 3 mouse and 3 mouse buttons and maybe a dedicated 4 way stick.  Any ideas as to the shape I should make it?

I'd say keep a consistent look and "feel" with the main unit, that way it may even seem like you meant to do it that way.  A box with some t molding and a nice overlay ought to do it.  If you want to get fancy you could build it into a TV tray for that ultra classy feel.  If you're dedicated to setting the controls in your lap, you might consider something like those hospital bedside tables that swing over the bed.  Not exactly that product, but there's an idea there somewhere.  That would keep the unit level for the user.

Sweet idea with the TV tray. I gotta make it foldable though and the top would be at least 4" thick
