Yesterday, I successfully soft modded my Wii on my first attempt and have the Homebrew Channel and emultors: Snes9x, MAME SDL Wii, and Wii64 Eventually, I plan on building a cabinet out of my Wii and PS2. I have a couple of questions though, the wii I modded, has a disk drive that will not read discs for one reason or another, I was wondering if and how it is possible to back up Wii games through a flash drive on my computer, also what are some popular applications on the homebrew channel?

You can back games up on a portable hard drive and access it via USB on the Wii.
Here's a good thread about it:

you have to add cios this and all this stuff to upgrade your wii to play backups off the hdd, it can be very confusing since there's a bunch of old guides out there. I just used pimpmywii and it downloads what you needs automatically if you have an internet connection. Some people really think this is a bad idea since you don't know what's really going on... but worked for mii! hah! I'd just make sure I had the latest version of pimpmywii . Read up on it and see how it goes, but I take no responsibility if it bricks :afro:.

Thanks for the info so far, what particular IOS is required to load the USB loaderGX, my system version is 4.3U with the HBC working and bootmii works from start up (It is a wii form 07/08) is the IOS58 installer enough found here http://wiibrew.org/wiki/IOS58_Installer (http://wiibrew.org/wiki/IOS58_Installer) or do I need a something else, also , do I need to restore the Trucha Bug?

I'd have to look that up since I haven't done it in a while, but there's a wiki called wiibrew that helps you figure that stuff out, just google it. If you use pimpmywii it'll install all that you need.

If I remember correctly from my wii modding that I did almost a year ago, all the trucha bug and additional IOS stuff is required to get the new games to play. As new games come out they are programmed in a way to bypass the hacks so there is a constant game of cat and mouse. Once it is modded if you don't have anything correct then you may not be able to play some games. I can't remember if the games try to run updates themselves that screw up the mod so you probably want to read up on it a bit. At the time I used a tutorial on Instructables.com that was fairly up to date. It looked like the author was constantly updating his tutorial. The good news is that not a lot has changed for the wii in the last year so you should find some decent tutorial somewhere.
I have owned 2 wiis over the years, I modded them both and then after trying out all the top rated games I sold them both in a few months time. I think if my kids were older then I would have hung on to one of them but I personally never got into Wii gaming very much. I did try though. I desperately wanted the wii 007 Goldeneye to be good, alas, nothing there. Anyway, check out instructables.com and like shatered mentioned, the wiibrew.org website is pretty helpful for the mod, just not as supportive for the playing backups for obvious reasons.

if you set up parental controls the system won't be able to mod without entering your pass first
and, I don't remember any game requiring an update. The Wii I had was on the latest firmware at the time, so I just installed the homebrew channel using Indiana Jones. Pimpmywii installs all the troucha hacks and that stuff. I only had issues with 2 games, Monster Hunter Tri and Red Steel 2, all other games work fine and even worked on fine on my brothers wii which I modded 2 years ago (and never updated).
Get it online, use pimpmywii --> then install wiiflow and done. You also need special software to get the games on the hdd.

Just as an update, I installed a cIOS, trucha bug etc.. and got the Configurable USB launcher to work, now all I am waiting for is my new dvd drive.
Thanks for all the help so far.
