ok, i'm a bit of a monitor newbie when it comes to the dangerous stuff but here goes:
i recently built my parents a new computer and they got a new monitor donating their 17" monitor to me. I also decided that i needed a cocktail cabinet as well as and upright and figured i could use this monitor, one problem: The picture is getting pretty dark, and that is set to the max brightness. i noticed on the 8liners chassis page (they updated it) that the big black thing on the back of the chassis (flyback???) had a coule of pots on it that brightened the monitor, the pc monitor i have also has these pots as well as one more.
my question is this:
is it dangerous to adjust these?
and will it brighten the monitor?
if not, what will?

Before you start playing around inside the PC monitor, check to make sure your video card's driver doesn't have a setting for brightness.
If you have a GeForce, like me, right click on desktop, choose settings, then advanced, NView, the 'Device Settings>>' at the bottom, then the 'Color Correction' tab. (just found brightness right now)

see, the thing about that is... i build all of my arcades (the 2 of them...) on a major budjet because i'm a kid ;D i don't have a geforce. i need to know wether this will work or not ???
and it is on the flyback, there are three pots. i believe it is a viewsonic but i'm not sure...

Most of those pots will adjust sinc and or screen center type of things, but each monitor is going to be different. It really shouldn't hurt anything to adjust them slowly while watching your screen.
Just do one at a time & if it doesn't so what you wanted, return it to it's original position (as close as you can get it...)
Some will also change the color balance on the screen... If that's the case you may be able to turn all of them up a little to get a brighter picture.
Also, if your monitor has a GAMMA setting, you may be able to turn that up to effectively get a brighter display (I had to do this with one I have)... It was a setting in the on-screen menu.

if the flyback isn't labelled you could try giving each a slight twist and see what it does--turning the brightness too hard may shorten the life of the flyback (and you as well)-- insert safety message here--

so there is a pretty high chance of me turning into a crispy nerd of nerds.........hmmm sounds like fun ;D i'll try this, even if the flyback dies, its a kindof old monitor and i might have another one soon 8) i'll post to tell of it worked or not...

I hope this helps I just found a 15" pc mon in the trash and the display was a little too dark so i opened the case and on the flyback was two pots the top one was "focus" and the bottom one was "screen" when you ajust screen the whole screen gets brighter. But all you need to do is just slightly turn up the screen pot for a brighter picture. **Warning do not ajust the screen pot untill you have found the location of the "Black level" pot because with the screen pot turned up higher the black levels need to be brought up higher also. Now I got lucky and found the black level pot on the neck board on the monitor I fixed. And yes the monitor I ajusted ran MK3 in game over mode for a week and there was no change in brightness levels :)
