Title: Modular guys - what control(s) determined your below control panel depth?
Post by: Crazy Cooter on October 21, 2011, 04:27:19 pm
You modular guys have the ability to add controls on a whim (or as funds allow) so I was wondering how much thought you put in to the required depth of your control panel when you built your cabinet.

As an example, did you guys ask yourselves questions like:
Does a star wars yoke extend further below the panel than a optical rotary...

I'm curious what control(s) are the governing controls to consider and who has found something that doesn't fit in their setup.  I'm looking to build a new cabinet this winter and don't want to find out later a control I want won't fit.

The best thing to do is going to be to gather or at least select all your components and see what the deepest one is - keep in mind top mount, bottom mount, thickness of cp top, etc.  I had to plan for my deepest component, an old spinner, and package other things around it.   However, if you make a box that's 5" deep at the back, 4" deep at the front, you're going to fit pretty much anything out there.

I don't have much depth in mine and haven't had any issues.  I do find that the spacing on the modules is much more of an issue.  I sometimes want to fit a larger control on a smaller (in my case 2U) module but it ends up extending past the sides.

I think I have any width concerns addressed, my biggest worry is building it at a certain depth and then find that a shifter I want doesn't fit below the panel.  The happ site is pretty sketchy on the shifter depths.  All I can find is a 4.72" measurement below the mount plate.  I swear I've seen shifters deeper than that but I don't remember.

Happ measurement:
