Title: Arcade cabs in tv and movies
Post by: mgb on October 18, 2011, 10:00:29 pm
I've now noticed the Robocop/Bad Dudes cabinet (same as I have) in Keenan & Kel and now in the tv show " Man Up". Not to mention a few of them in the Robocop 2 movie.
I love how the tv shows put some fake name on them.

Oops my bad... It was the second episode this season... "People who love peepholes"

An old thread but relevant for the OP.

I did see that episode of Two and a Half Men.  Those cabs were very nice.

I just watched Big last night, and it was way cool to see all the arcades and arcade games still around in '88. For that matter, look at what I found in a laundrymat, the other day.

(OH, and I got a replay. I totally forgot to play it. For someone, then.)

Just watched "Wargames" last night, a movie from 1983 starring Matthew Broderick.  He plays a fair bit of Galaga in the movie.  In the background at the arcade, I saw a Jungle Hunt, a Zaxxon, and several others.

They actually brought a Galaga to MB's house so he could get fairly good at it before shooting the scene where he plays it.

I did notice that he'd mastered the dual-ship technique.

Watching HGTV last night (lame!) and a House Hunters episode (Rando so lame!) these two rich young dudes were looking for a swinging Bachelor pad in Chicago.  They looked at this awesome penthouse place that was completely empty EXCEPT for an Arcade machine (couldn't get a good look to see what it is, I should have Paused it) sitting in what was the Living Room.  Completely odd and out of place, and NO ONE referenced it!  I kept shouting at my wife "How are they walking by the cab, why are they not saying anything about it, why would that be sitting there when everything else has been removed???"

She did not share my confusion nor enthusiasm.

Guys did purchase that pad and made some nice modifications, place looked sweet, but not a Cab in sight when complete.

I happened to catch some of an episode the other day, and they were in some guy's storehouse or something - he had a michelin man and other weird stuff, and I was waiting for them to find a pin. Sure enough they do, and this thing was almost mint, some obscure title to me, but obviously worth at least a grand. They juked him for two hundred bucks.

Not uncommon. I've seen 're-issues' like this, though in better shape, of Pac Mspac, Centipede/Millipede/Missile Command.

Speakin of Kenan and Kel. The show "All That" always began with a brief skit of the actors hanging out in some back stage room. In the back ground you can clearly see a cabinet running Shinobi.

Also not really an arcade on tv moment, but in Family Matters there was an episode where a cop is describing some violent situation. I think Karl Winslow asks the cop "where did you get all that from?" The cop replies "Mortal Kombat from Sega." I think one of the writers were a lil confused.

In the movie "Juice" (Tupac, Omar Epps) there's a Street Fighter cabinet (the first one surprisingly, and this movie was released not long after Street Fighter II exploded in the gaming scene) in a scene taking place in a bodega I think. The late Tupac plays the game a few times throughout the film.

That reminds me!

Not the arcade version, but in the video for "Juicy" by Notorious B.I.G. there's a scene where a couple people are seen playin Street Fighter II in Biggie's home (durin the "Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis. When I was dead broke man, I couldn't picture this." line).

How's that! Pac playin Street Fighter in the film "Juice." Big playin Street Fighter II in the video "Juicy." Ain't that some mind blowin ish!

They mus be rockin a round of Street Fighter every day up there in Hip Hop heaven lol.

Just saw "Going the Distance" with Drew Barrymore and... Justin Long, where Centipede plays a role in the movie.  They meet in a bar where she is playing the game, has the high score, and he interrupts her flow (picture below).  Later on he gives her a Centipede shirt when they're dating and is playing the game alone after they break up (or just missing her, can't remember).

Decent movie, 1st half better than second, wife picked & liked it.

On the series The Comicbook Store  (http://comicbookstoreseries.com/v2/) A Simpsons cabinet is played in one of the episodes, it's got fake 'Blaster Blaster' artwork on it.

There's also a Guantlet cabinet elsewhere in the store seen in a few shots.

I remember seeing a Ms. Pac-Man cabinet in the season 1 finale of Walking Dead on AMC (Episode "TS-19"). It was in the rec room of the Centers for Disease Control. The building exploded at the end of the episode, the cabinet along with it.  :(

Post by: jtslade on November 19, 2011, 06:40:58 am
Raising Hope is a good show from the same guy who did My Name is Earl...

I have noticed that since there is so many advertising promotional agreements in TV today, all brand names from any company that is not actively sponsoring the show is wiped from the show. Its so bad now that anytime we actually see a real brand that its almost shocking.

You can make out what original Pin and cab these were before they were altered..

The old TV show "What's Happening Now" has a Three Stooges game in it, with modified side art to highlight the manufacturer. You can see the game in the opening credits here at the 23 sec mark.

What's Happening Now (Season 1) "TV Show Clip" . Purchase DVD Today @ Black American Cinema! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fxc7HQ29o24#)

KLOV incorrectly lists the show as "What's Happening", which was the older show with the same characters earlier in their life.

Not that's it a surprise or anything, but that situation is how I found out those shows are fake. Nathan said on his Facebook he never bought the Cabinet from them, after he told them he wasn't interested because they wanted too much, the show asked him to pretend like he's buying it from them. Nathan said he bought one shortly after that off craigslist for $350  :laugh2:

Was out with my brother this weekend, and we saw a girl in a truck that he thought was going to be plump - and then she stepped out and had a bod that startled him. First time I'd heard the term butterface.

I found (had sort of forgotten) these in Never Say Never Again. Well, I didn't forget the 'holograph' game, I just wasn't sure whether it was this movie or Octopussy.

The arcade is funny, because not only are there probably forty of only two titles, the 'old folks' seem not sure what to do with them. I do vaguely remember this when I first saw the movie.

I was watching some old episodes of "The Incredible Hulk" (with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno) this week. I noticed that in the episode "Terror in Times Square," David Banner is working at Wizard's Arcade in New York City.

Because it was only 1978, all of the machines in the arcade are pinball machines. As far as I can tell, there are no video games to be found.

Several scenes show Banner collecting coins and repairing a pinball machine.

Yeah, Puzzle fighter is iffy... it was always out of focus. But the Blitz was so prominent I think Midway should have paid for product placement, if it wasn't a decade old game!

Yeah, Green Lantern was pretty average... but I have no nostalgia for the character, so that my factor in. Some of the alien lantern designs were cool, but you only saw them briefly.

Midway should actually be paying the people that watched Green Lantern long enough to see their cabinet, IMO.

Why?

Have you all forgotten Hulk?  Not the incredible one, just Hulk.

Yeah, Green Lantern was pretty average... but I have no nostalgia for the character, so that my factor in. Some of the alien lantern designs were cool, but you only saw them briefly.

Ang Lee's Hulk? Agreed, what a waste of film.

Yes.  Sadly, neither was all that good.

First of all he is not just a kid, he IS the WIZARD.

Second, I just reread the synopsis of that movie on wikipedia.....messed up.  The autistic kid's mom hires a guy to kidnap him from his half-brother while leaving the brother wherever he finds him.  All I remember is that sweet power glove and super mario bros. 3.

In the tv show Alcatraz Jorge Garcia (lost's Hurley) is introduced playing an arcade game on a cocktail cabinet, can't see what game but there's a reference to needing to double up to get the high score...maybe galaga....or maybe just an empty cabinet?

Though I haven't seen it, my guess is that it's probably Galaga since it appears to be a favorite game among some of JJ Abrahm's production folks:

Coming back to this: I'm watching Buckaroo Banzai. The Arcade At The Movies page says it's a Buckaroo Banzai cab. It's actually a Star Trek cab, as you can see by the side art. Next to it looks like it might be Do Run Run.

There was an episode of Auction Hunters where they find a Ms Pac-man and the guy who buys it (though in reality he didn't) is Nathan Barnatt, aka Talking Classics' Keith Apicary.
Nathan Barnatt (Keith Apicary)On Auction Hunters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct6balclZaI#)

Thats not even a real Ms Pac....its a Pacman or Galaxian conversion. Look at the edges from the marquee to the control panel. A ms pac/galaga style cab has a more straight angle coming down from the marquee. Pacs/galx have a gradual curve to them....just like the one in the video.

Then there's the episode of News Radio where they get a Stargate for the office. They call it "Stargate Defender" for some reason....

True!
Not a cab though, he's using one of the S.H.I.E.L.D. monitors to play the game instead of watching for baddies or whatever. :tool:
