Title: Beatmania or Stepmania
Post by: Shieldwolf on September 15, 2003, 12:56:35 am
Couple of questions. Which is better and why? Anyone know if there are plans for a karoke revolution, drummania, guitarmania or djmania for pc?

Better is opinion on what you can do and like.  Beatmania is a turntable and 5 keys, DDR is using your feet.

You are comparing apples and oranges.

I asked my friend who used to play beatmania all the time, and he said there's a newer better beatmania called "Mixwaver."  It's compatible with the files for the older Beatmania, and has lots of nice features - like being able to assign two different scratch keys (to accomodate both lefties and righties) and being able to sort songlists by difficulty or number of players or composer, and support for songs that use more than 5 keys per player.

EDIT:  forgot to mention - there's a Mixwaver 2 out as well.  Usually listed as "mixwaver II".  I'd post a link but my friend sent the files to me directly again.   You may have to be able to read Korean or Japanese to understand the download pages.   ::)

I'm sorry I didn't mean beatmania I meant DWI which does use dancepads. I have stepmania and i would like to get some mixing, drumming and guitar games for the pc. I'm not even sure if they make them. Which ones are the best and can I get the links or address.

Mixwaver II is a great "mixing" game.  It's a one-game-only emulator for the Beatmania arcade game.  It works well on a 6-button layout too.

If you google search for mixwaver, you should find a site that says it's the official release site...  it might be mostly in japanese or korean though.  My friend gave me the installer file when I installed it, so I don't know precisely which one he downloaded...   but the game is in English, so I can play it just fine, just can't read its web page.   :D

I can probably email you the installer file if you want.  Songs are another matter - he brought over his song collection on two CDs.  Those might be a trick to find.

I just came across CHD files for a bunch of Beatmania games.

Are there plans to add these to Mame?
Are they already in there but dissabled?
Are they used by another emulator?

( For those of you with binary newsgroup access, the CHD's and roms are currently on alt.binaries.emulators.arcade )

yeah, they are planning on going into mame.  There was a post on mame.net awhile ago.  I found a test mame with just beatmania drivers.  It still has some ways to go.

I have a few of these chd's and have run them with the WIP MAME (djmain.exe). It's pretty good so far. There were a few minor graphic glitches on complete mix, but 6th mix ran perfect.

As for guitar freaks/drummania there are a few simulators out now that support those. You may check bemanistyle.com for links to those.

As far as karoke, nothing has been made yet.

Where can I lay my grubby hands on this WIP MAME? I did a search for djmain.exe but all I could find was a few Japanese pages that also had some references to BeatMania,  but I don't know Japanese (at least thats what I think it is)  ???
