I've layed out everything else the way I want it but I can't decide where to put my player 1/player 2 start buttons. Would be good to know what you guys think. The hole in the middle is for the spinner when I get it.
-
top middle...with a admin button in between.....unless you plan on using shift functions
-
I'm not going to use any admin buttons. I will have Pause and exit on the coin door. For everything else I will use the shift function.

Whoops I voted middle but I meant above the player. Either way would be fine but if it comes down to one vote them make sure mine is above player 8)
-
I'd go with the front.
-
Middle is definitely more traditional and IMO looks the best.

I like the middle, it looks the best.

In the middle, definitely not in the front. My second machine I put those and the escape (game quit) button on the front. Big mistake especially with the game quit. People tend to lean into them and mess up the game. We finally got some covers with finger holes for the buttons just to prevent that. May not be a problem with the start buttons, but it might if you are just scrolling through your list on the front end.

Buttons on the front panel are no problem and actually more appropriate on certain cabinet designs ( such as those based on Euro JAMMA cabinets like ours, where the playing stance has the player away from the machine. On those with larger flat surfaces we've always kept start buttons directly above each player, but on your panel where the centre line is actually towards the top, I'd have to say the centre would be the best place.

I was suprised to see that most people prefer them in the middle because I couldn't remember control panels being like this at the arcades. How wrong I was, I just looked at lots of pictures of arcade machines and this seems to be the most popular layout. I am now torn between having them in the middle, or having them above each player. :-\

If you're in a heated game and need to Pause, won't having the Pause button down on the coin door present a bit of a problem?

True. I have thought about this. However, I'm not a big fan of having a control panel cluttered with admin buttons. I think I will maybe have pause activated in 2 ways: (a) 2 buttons pressed on cp together as shift function for fast pausing, (b) pause button on coin door for guests who don't understand / remember the shift keys.

For your panel, I think the middle looks better than over each players controls. I

My pause is set to start + down.

Do the P1 and P2 buttons have images on them? If so, anywhere is fine.
As for admin buttons, you don't need 1" buttons for admin buttons. You could always go smaller. That way they are handy but less visible.

Voted above, but your image for middle is not bad either. On my 4P behemoth, above seemed to make the most sense.

Yes, the satrt buttons do have images on them. From the results of this poll and advice by friends I hereby have decided to put the start buttons in the middle (until I change my mind).
