Title: Dedicated Shooting Cab -- anyone done one?
Post by: GCS on September 24, 2011, 01:09:12 pm
Thinking about adding a second cab to the room and was considering setting up a dedicated shooting cab.

We can't play shooting games on our main arcade as I was never able to get the Aimtrak guns to work.  After 2-3 weeks of effort and many, many, many trials we think its the angle of the screen in the cab (it sits angled back about 45 degrees) and there is no changing and the wife will not let me do a new cab.

Anyway I have been tossing around the idea of a simple dedicated shooter cab.

32-40" LCD hanging on the wall
Wooden box in the floor as a pedestal housing the computer and "holsters" for the guns on the top

Kind of like a showcase cab.

Simple, clean, and not too roomy.

Anyone done anything like this?

Also any current gen games (ala big buck hunter etc) work ok in MAME?

I know I'll have things like Duck Hunt, Hogans Alley, Carnevil, Jurrasic Park, Area 51 games to play but I have lots of guests over who like to "hunt" so something like a BBH game would be nice.

I was about to go all in with the aimtracks until I decided just to get a PS2 and guncons. I paid around $100 total and got a PS2 and a bunch of shooting games. If you go this route, you'll find there are limitations to the guncons. Certain games work with different guns, CRT only, etc. Mame has some good shooting games, but all the shooters I wanted were available on console.

Hmmm hadn't really thought about the console idea at all to be honest.

Guess I need to figure out what makes sense.

It would be cool to have things like recoil and what not with the guns and even perhaps switching out pistols to shotguns or something for certain games as well.  Not 100% necessary but would be neat to do.

Of course working with an LCD is an absolute must.  Not dealing with a giant heavy pain in the butt CRT.

If you set up the LCD fairly close to your existing cab, you could just add it as a second monitor and run everything from your cab for some cost savings.  Cost would be LCD and cables only.  Just a thought.

Great, now I have to check if I have a second output on my vid card and look at LCD prices.

Interesting thought but no I would set it up as a separate beast so that there is something else in the game room to play while the MAME cab is occupied.

We entertain fairly often so another thing to play would be nice to have.

Yeah, that is a downside to it.  I'm thinking of doing something similar in the future but I may end up running the bigger screen from an existing cab as an intermediate step (keep the costs more spread out).

I have been thinking about this topic for about a year. I would like to hook up game hunter to my 10 foot wide projector. Does anybody know if this is possible? ??? I just dont know how these guns work.  :dunno

If you are talking about the Ultimarc Aimtrak guns they work off of an infrared signal.  The receiver would need to be in front of the screen somewhere.

If you are talking about anything else ... I have no idea.
