I would like to have a booklet with all the fighting moves for a bunch of fighting games. We used to play all these games, but it's hard to remember all the special moves for every version of every game. Has anyone created anything like this, or should we start one?
I was thinking of:
Darkstalkers
Mortal Kombat
Time Killers
Street Fighter
Primal Rage
Samurai Showdown
Killer Instinct
-
That would be a great idea. I know some MAME variant or addition that was supposed to have this information embedded within the in-game GUI, but I'm not sure if that was ever finished.
-
I've tried to start a "fight card" project a couple times.
Everyone wants it, but nobody wants to do all the work themself (including me).
The last time it came up was here:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=113516.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=113516.0)
command.dat already contains all the information and can be displayed in game with some MAME builds btw
-
I just purchased the strategy guide used on ebay for Street fighter 2 turbo, cost like $6.00
-
Maybe we could scan the strat guides and share? You could always just print out the faqs at gamefaqs.com. Though it wouldn't be as pretty
-
Well lets do it. It doesn't have to be super snazzy. A physical booklet works better for me than a digital version. I've already sort of started with MK1 and MK2 and will upload what I've done so far.
If any of you want to help, start of by posting the game you are doing. Lets keep everything in Microsoft Word or a Word compatible format so it is editable.
-
You may want to use Google docs so everyone can see, at the same time, what work has been done. It can avoid people duplicating efforts and you may get more participation that way. I'd guess that it has the functionality that you'll need for this.
-
Move lists I've collected and thrown in folders:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Q7VWQRHJ (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Q7VWQRHJ)
I'd prefer them to be at least a standard size or aspect ratio.
Something that would be of use to the greatest number of people.
My idea was to make a template with a standardized layout and symbols,
but it would be a lot easier just to chop up the ones I've collected.

Anybody heard of strategywiki.org? I searched a few fighters and I really like the simple table format they have:
http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Street_Fighter_II/Moves (http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Street_Fighter_II/Moves)
http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Street_Fighter_III:_3rd_Strike/Moves (http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Street_Fighter_III:_3rd_Strike/Moves)
http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat/Moves (http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat/Moves)
Shouldn't be too hard to capture a bunch of those into a booklet!
-
I've actually given thought to writing an app that would display this information, as well as other instruction cards, to a second monitor. Though CP wizard has this data in it already doesn't it?
-
Yup, CP wizard uses controls.dat Problem is, its kind of a pain to navigate through with a joystick. A physical printout would be better.
If you don't want pretty.

Ok... I actually have much less done than I thought. The google docs suggestion is a good one, but I'd like to keep it in this thread. I don't think there will be a lot of people working on this. I still need to add a title (thinking of just using the marquees) and a legend which explains what the controls mean). Shouldn't take too long. I'll post my work in here, but if anyone wants to help, we need help with the following:
1. Finding the moves online
2. Creating a page for a specific game
If you want to do a page, just post that you are working on X game
-
I am going to just print out the strategywiki moves pages of interest. There are color icons instead of difficult to visualize abbreviations. The pages all have a 'printable' version as well.

Link? I may not have seen this. I don't want anything flashy, just something that works.

They are very simple which is good. I wonder if there is an easy way to convert these to a doc of some sort?

Wow what a FAIL!
-
pretty cool. A printed out manual isn't as cool as displaying the moves on a 2nd screen, but it's way more practical.

It kinda is to me. This allows someone to browse through a bunch of characters and pick one they want. I wouldn't mind a second screen in addition, but that really increases the scope of work on this thing.

A nifty little program working on a touchscreen would be balls awesome for something like this....

That's my plan. I started messing around with it last year, but lost interest when nobody seemed interested in making up the fight cards.

It's actually pretty easy using touchbuddy.
Each player can cycle through their own cards on the same screen.
(MAMEhooker can do the same thing using dedicated navigation buttons instead of a touchscreen: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=113516.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=113516.0) )
I plan to start a new cab after I finish upgrading my driving cab, but that is probably still a couple months away.
This is one of the main features that I want to incorporate.
What I'd really like to see in a fight card project is some standardized size and style.
I'm not sure what that should be though.
Tall and slim, so 2 can fit on a 4:3 screen?
4:3 so each can fit on it's own little screen?
Something else?
I have 15" and 12" 4:3 touchscreens I could use.
Or a 19" widescreen that I considered using an add-on touchscreen kit with and only having half the screen visible, so it would somewhat resemble the move lists on viewlix machines.
If there were some standard layout for the fight cards that everyone agreed on, that would help me decide which way to go.
Presently, I've pretty much resolved myself to just cutting up the original move lists to get it done quickly.

I just booked marked http://www.umk3.net/ (http://www.umk3.net/)]http://www.umk3.net on my Droid. Thanks for that!
Someone with a little knowledge of Java and Eclipse could make a Killer List Of Fighting Moves app for the Android. Tablets are pretty cheap so you could have a dedicated one for your cabinet.
I'd like to do it myself but I already have a long list of apps I don't have time to create.
-
I was actually visualizing my design to sit above the primary monitor, so it could also double as the second screen for games that used it like Punch Out and Dragon's Lair. I never thought of a touchscreen though.
I was also going to extend it to reading in the instruction cards from the .zip files that Mr. Do produces, as he has a standardized naming scheme for them making it a much more "Plug and Play" solution. That would also permit the standardization to be extended to the move cards.

I was actually going to use C#, but Java's just as easy and Android is a good platform. I'd have to go out and grab a Tablet first though, this might actually be what motivates me to break down and get one...
-
Many different ways to go about it, and half of them already exist.
They are all useless without standard size pictures to display. :'(
I'm thinking 400x600, so two would fit on an 800x600 screen.
Anyone prefer a different aspect ratio?
-
I think the mk ones are awesome, if someone had those off-line and had them all linked to a menu or table of contents. That would be double balls awesome. I think the format it's in works great, the fighter select screen, then moves for players

Hahaha now that is funny. I always love tattoo fails.

the story goes hes prefers playing 2p so its kinda right from that direction if you read it down his arm..
still stupid but at least its not wrong...
anyway back on topic, i'd love something like this (the move list app) for an android tab. very interested to see what you guys come up with.
