Title: Anyone recognise this cabinet/game?
Post by: dextercf on September 18, 2011, 09:39:15 am
I'm going to pick up this cabinet during the upcoming week.
It's free, so no questions where asked before pickup (yet). And anything is acceptable, as it is free! =D

But, do any of you know what this might be?

Ahh.. So the monitors are 60Hz boxes.
I would have loved if they where 15Hz, that would make for a great cabinet.

Any suggestions on other games there might be reasonable to install as this boxing game looks like sheit, and perhaps is fubar.

Another thought might be to have two separat games in this thing, but what kinda games run 60Hz?

Could I pop in a board like this, and play away?

You're confusing horizontal and vertical. The horizontal speed is 15kHz, the vertical speed is 60Hz. Those are standard arcade monitors. Anything* will run on them.

That appears to only be the rom board of VF3, you'd need the Model 3 motherboard to attach it to:

Also, with only two 8-way sticks, it would be a little hard to play VF3.

Now thats great news!
Makes me not so strangled in game choice..

Ah, so the game I liked to is newer and needs another motherboard? Do you know what "generation" is in the cabinet, and perhaps suggestions to other games that might fit.

Of course I would be forced to drill a few holes, rip out a joystick and stick inn some buttons. I'm all up for the task! :D

Some JAMMA boards accept the roms as add-ons, others do not. You could have two separate jamma compatible boards in there, or one game hooked up to both with some kind of splitter or adapter (that you would have to build yourself).

It sounds like you would be greatly benefited by doing some more reading on JAMMA boards and the way various arcade systems were set up. The way you're asking your questions makes me think there is some basic knowledge of arcade cabinets in general that you haven't picked up yet.

Your absolutely right.
There is a lot of stuff I still don't know about PCB's, motherboards and such in this hobby. As for the basics of woodcraft, controls and such I'm on my 9th year in the hobby. Have only done MAME stuff until now. The previously bought cocktail and Tetris JAMMA board, which works apart from some touchups and rewireing of controls, have got me on the path of restoring/rebuilding genuine machines.

Perhaps you got some pointers for threads, sites, books or other relevant sources for information?

Can't think of anything specific, but a quick google search lead me to this video:
Jamma Intro/6 in 1 switcher: Video Game Knowledge by Retrowaretv (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCRgZJLvTIw#ws)

It explains a few basics just about the boards in general. Might lead you to asking yourself questions and give you some background to figure out how to answer them.

Great link, i allready subscribe to his videos.
I got the JAMMA stuff covered. Its when games got motherboards, soundboards, standoffs and what not things get confusing.

But nevermind, I'll figure stuff out when I pick the cabinet up.
Tonight I got my hands on a Photoplay machine, which (according to the guy) boots randomly.
As I have figured, it's basicly a regular computer with a touchscreen.

So i picked it up yesterday.
The previous owner was smart enough to have it picked up with the shovel of a tractor and dumped it (carefully) onto my trailer.
I had to get my father in law and my best friend to help me get it into my garage, this cabinet is heavy!

I plugged it in, nothing. I could hear the sound of the monitors, but there was no picture.
Drilled out the locks, as I forgot to ask for the keys and never got them. Vacumed, sprayed bug spray like a maniac as the cab was full of banana flies and a faul stench. Washed it up good and started going over stuff with my multimeter.

The reason why it wasn't booting was the PSU. Got that changed and everything lit up like nothing ever happened.
Played a fast game, then retired for the night.

Attatched are pics of pre and post cleanup and psu replacement.
Also, there are two clips on my youtube thingy here: http://www.youtube.com/user/dextercf (http://www.youtube.com/user/dextercf)

Cool cab, awesome that you got it going.  :applaud:

Btw, I see you've got a vid of a tetris cocktail on your page... I'd love to see some 2-player gameplay in action, that doesn't seem to exist anywhere on the net that I could find.

The tetris cab is undergoing some serious restoration at the moment.
The cocktail came to my house without a PCB/game inside, so I just bought the cheapest one I could find in Norway as I was eager to test if the monitor and else where working. So the control panel is going to need some modification and I'm debating myself if I should spend the money on decals to make it a dedicated cab or if I should get the regular 60 in 1.

I'll certainly make a video of 2 player mode when it's possible.
