Title: What's your opinion about my potential tube swap?
Post by: ebo0763 on September 18, 2011, 01:37:03 am
I could swap a tube for my 25 WG k7191 chassis with the arcade shop nearby.  I have a zenith and it's burnt (thus the swap) and instead I could have a nice looking Martahon (by CNA) tube, from a T2 cab (k7197). The problem is that the marathon tube or it's yoke makes a high pitch noise. I know for sure it's not the chassis because I've tried with a good one and it still makes that noise. Could the yoke be bad? Are they hard to swap and mess with?

Another thing that affect me decision making is that the phosphor on the marathon tube has a very light color, necessitating a darker room to play in (while the zenith is darker).

But I like the fact that the corners of the marathon are more rounded, it looks more retro.

Any suggestions?

*The noise is not a continuous tone, it's like pulsating. And quite a high pitch.

Also, another interesting fact about the marathon tube. When I show a red only screen (or blue or green) it becomes bright and once I return to the menu, it stays dim for a while. And I tried with two k7000 chassis, same thing happened.

The only thing it could be is loose H yoke windings. You could secure them with hot glue or non acetic silicone. As for the blooming issue, maybe the tube is not a direct replacement and causing problems. I've never heard of that mfgr. Could be a questionable quality tube....

Well I guess it really looks like it. And the convergence is very bad. Not very inspiring I got to admit...
