okay well i been messing around with mame for abit since i have the arcade cab up and running and there are some real gems i never heard of.
now please guys, dont post pacman, double dragon, golden axe, simpsons, turtles etc we all know those games and they are awesome, but i want to hear what games u guys feel are not house hold names but still rock.
not sure if this has been done yet. but ill start things off with what i have found. ill add to the list as i get more i like.
battle circuit (capcom 1997) . some might know this one. capcom king of beat them ups, yet this one is not nearly as well known as games like final fight for instance... worth checking out.
[CVSK] Battle Circuit (Arcade) [HD] Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YgiY__Vrzc#ws)
Crude Buster (Data East 1990) not nearly as popular as bad dudes vs dragon ninja, i still like it.
Crude Buster, 1990 Data East (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsOkTbZZ9WY#)
Congo Bongo (Sega 1983) never in my life heard of this game but found it like a few days ago. reminds me abit of donkey kong pretty sure maybe thats where they got the idea for it? but still its pretty awesome.
Congo Bongo (1983 Sega) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dok9ahpSacc#ws)
Domino Man (Midway 1982) some of u might know this game, but i found this one a couple of months ago and i like it alot. there is just something about these oldschool games from the 80s that i like, maybe cause u cant continue and have to see how far u can go on one credit?
also checkout the other games with the same character TAPPER and TIMBER, tapper alot might know but timber is very cool one forsure.

Off the Wall (Sente, 1984)
A hybrid of Squash / Tennis / Volleyball
-
Chicken Shift
Zektor (spinner)
Cameltry (spinner)

Flicky gets regular play here.
Cute and challenging platformer. Dunno why it never caught on.
If you're trying to get your wife to play MAME a bit, show her this one, she'll love it! It's got baby chicks and everything! ::)
-
In The Hunt.
Never heard of it before I found MAME. It is now one of my favorites.
+1 for Cameltry
-
Roc 'N Rope
-
Targ and Spectar don't get much love, but I like em. They're simple, yet can be pretty challenging past the first few levels, and like you mention, there's no continue with em, so it's get as far as you can with 1 credit.
-
... so it's get as far as you can with 1 credit.
The way it should be.

You know, I don't remember ever hearing of Targ until about a month ago. Someone in my area was selling one on Craigslist for $55.
I never really knew about Galaga '88 until mame and I like it more than Galaga
-
I dont know if they are underrated or not but I always had a soft spot for Cabal & P.O.W
-
I found a game called "Escape Kids" that I had never played until MAME. It's a lot of fun ;D

+1 to cameltry I don't know if it's underrated but I love Mr. Do, first real arcade I owned as a kid
-
Someone here a few months ago mentioned Battle Balls, which has become a favorite in my home.
-
Juno first is cool. found it from another thread like this.
-
I said Tapper yesterday at work and everyone gave me that blank stare. Awesome game!
So, is it really not htat common? Or did i just have a bad sample set of 30 year old software developers?
EDIT: After doing some more reading, my co-workers are just losers I guess. Tapper was/is HUGE!
-
I remember playing Tapper in the arcades, and it's usually on most of the video game compilations I've seen, so I think it's just the group you talked to.
-

I remember those. Thing that stuck with me the most was the huge, uber-solid joystick!

Yeah, I'd say Tapper is pretty common. Now if you'd say Timber, thats a little less common but its a great game.
-
I love Ninja Baseball Batman!
Another good one is Ninja Kids. My son and I play that one quite a bit.
-
I recently came across 'Cannon Dancer/Osman'. I've always loved me some Strider, but was blissfully unaware of this 'Spiritual Sequel' Had a lot of fun with it the last week or so 8)
-
Cameltry (with spinner of course)
Reactor
Wacko
U.N. Squadron
ESP Ra.De.
Time Killers
Puzzle Bobble (P1 vs. P2)
Rampart (trackball version is better)
-
Here are games I didn't really know about (or played) until MAME but find myself playing often now:
For 1-player...
Pinball Action
Land Sea Air Squad (poor man's commando, but I like it better for some reason - this one I did play at the bowling alley regularly!)
Kamikaze
Astro Blaster
Bank Panic
Cameltry
For quick 2 player simultaneous action...
Pigskin
Sky Diver
Hat Trick
Off the Wall (Sente) needs spinner and joystick only - great fun!
Neo Turf Masters
Quiz and Dragons
Caveman Ninja (my 4-year old son loves to play this together)
Hard to say which are 'underrated'. I assume that means somewhat obscure, but I remember putting many quarters into Tapper, Mad Planets, and Rampart which were mentioned. All of those are great too btw ;)
-
Legend of Hero Tonma.
-
Windjammers!
One of the best party games around

Space Zap
I'll have to check my 'favorites' list on the other computer, there's a ton of stuff on there.
-
Nibbler
Just give it a try. Controls are not perfect but it is a fun fast paced game.
-
I think this is a common game but I never see it mentioned:
Qix
EDIT: Did some snooping. Seems to be pretty darned common but no one ever talks about it.

Nibbler is a great game, one of my favorites. Whats wrong with the controls?
-
+1 for Tapper. I'd never heard of it either, but it's hellishly addictive. Best of all, it's unique, which is why I find myself going back to it time and again.
Another random game I've come across is Oh My God!, a Japanese puzzle game.

Crater Raider
Special Criminal Investigation
Growl
Shadow Force
Ragnagard
Out Zone

+1 for Timber,
I went home last night and gave it a try after seeing it in your post. Surprisingly fun, and like Tapper, surprisingly unique! :applaud:
-
Yeah Timber is awesome. I never heard of it until Mame.
another great game is Domino Man

I guess the controls are as good as they could be. It just seems like sometimes you hit a wall and it decides which way to turn for you. Could just be that I did not spend enough time with it.
As a side note, if anyone is emulating the Apple ii (I had the iiC as a kid), find snakebyte! Similar game.
-
The nibbler controls are supposed to go like that, it makes it harder so you have to keep moving without stopping and thinking about the best path to take
-
I like Super Glob and I'm Sorry.
Also like City Connection/Cruisin'

I just started playing Nibbler a few nights ago and it's very addictive.
The trick to the controls (if you want to call it a trick) is that Nibbler will automatically choose a direction if he bumps into a corner. If he bumps into a flat surface, he'll stay put and give you a moment to plan your next move. Mastering this is absolutely critical if you want to survive beyond wave 10.
To illustrate (arrow is Nibbler):
________
---->|
|
|
In this situation, Nibbler will automatically turn downwards and keep moving.
|
--->|
|
In this situation, Nibbler will sit as shown until you move him.
EDIT: I'll also add that a 4-way joystick really really helps in this game. I tried with an 8-way and found it unplayable.
-
I saw someone mentioned Wacko. I finally got a chance to play this game on its dedicated cabinet and controls this weekend. I really like this game. Its fun and a challenge.
-
I put a spinner on my cab so I could play Gee Bee, Bomb Bee, and Cutie Q, but I found I really like Quester too, a later Namco paddle game (lots of ideas stolen from Arkanoid, but it has some interesting elements of its own).
