Title: JPAC Question
Post by: mmonden on September 12, 2011, 10:41:45 pm
Hello all,

I am starting to convert a quarterback machine into a vertical or "classic" MAME machine.

I plan to rewire the game to use a JAMMA harness and a JPAC. My control panel layout will have 2 joysticks, 12 control buttons, and 2 player buttons. I have seen that credits are added to the game via a combination of buttons. Can I create a coin button and put it on the control panel instead of using the combination of buttons? Is there any other items that you can see based on my plan?

Thanks!  ???

If you are using a jamma harness and jpac you can use the actual coin mech to register coins or tokens or you can turn the coin return buttons into coin buttons to add credits.

Thanks for the info. I understand the concept. The question was really about how the JPAC reads the coin signal thru the jamma harness. Either by a player dropping in a coin or by pressing a coin button a signal is sent to the jamma harness and then into the JPAC. I guess my question is about how the JPAC reads that signal - or if it reads the signal? Or do I have to run the credit button using one of the extra JPAC inputs and then map that button to register a coin using MAME?

The J-pac takes the coin "signals" from the Jamma connector.
P1's coin slot is pin 16 on the parts side, and P2's is pin T on the opposite side.

You could wire up a button straight to the J-pac's "auxiliary" connections, there are 5 screw-in connections per player outside of the Jamma edge that are for the non-jamma standard buttons (aka Kick Harness connections).
Then just configure Mame to take coin credits from that wired button.  I'm assuming there are these extra connections for time when people have more than the 2 standard coin mechs (4-player cabinets etc.) and need to wire the extra coin-mech switches to them.

Personally, I'd just use the coin connection through the Jamma loom. Having functional coin mechs on an arcade cabinet is a big part of the experience, IMHO.

Thanks Guys! That was the exact info I was looking for. ultimarc.com has, in my opinion, poor documentation.

Also, I bought my IPAC years ago and I dont see the the cable that goes between the JPAC and the computer (the male to male keyboard cable) any I dea where I can get one?
