Buddy of mine says I can have his old laptop, it's got a cracked screen though. How hard is it to replace a cracked screen, and where do I go for guidance?

on most models it's very easy. the hardest part is usually getting the plastic bezel off the laptop itself. some of them try and be "pretty" and hid the screws in stupid places that are hard to reach.
once you get it off you'll unscrew the sides of the lcd, unplug the invertor from below the screen and remove the broken panel. then you'll look up the model number on the back of the panel and look for a panel online that's teh same size. MOST of the widescreens out there use teh same internal connector, but there are a variety of sizes and shapes, and it has to be an exact match.
with any luck you'll find a panel at a good price that's a higher resolution. I swapped a 1336x768 panel in a cheaper laptop with a 1080p panel i pulled from a broken high-end laptop with no issues.

Cool, how much do they run, and where would you recommend I get one? Thanks!

All the replacments I've ever done have been with pulls from other dead machines, but there are several retailers online:

I say it depends on that OLD Laptop if it's worth fixing.
Some new laptops are the same price of a LCD Laptop screen (maybe add another $50.00 or so, but you get a better Laptop and warranty).

Another option is to not replace it. I had an older Macbook Pro whose screen cracked. I decapitated it, placed it into the drawer at our kitchen desk, and hooked it up to a monitor and KB, both which I had laying around. Cost: $0.00 and a fine kitchen computer to boot.

Yeah, I have a couple of extra monitors laying around, I was thinking about doing that.
