Is there a way to use windows joysticks with MAME?

yes, enable joystick support in mame. Look in the ini file.

You should most likely be able to use it. (if windows is seeing it.)
Have to enabled the joystick in the MAME ini file? Also, have you reassigned the buttons as necceary?
I haven't done it in a while, I'm sure someone here can tell you the exact setting, probably set the Joystick option to "auto" or to "1" I can remember the parameters... ???

I thinks that updating the direct-x drivers will help!

code_3005, if you run into basic questions like this one, easyemu (http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/) and mame.net FAQ (http://www.mame.net/mamefaq.html#t02) are great spots to start.
Not that asking is a bad thing on this forum, but sometimes it can be quicker and clearer if you look at the about two links first.
FWIW,
I haven't done it in a while, I'm sure someone here can tell you the exact setting, probably set the Joystick option to "auto" or to "1" I can remember the parameters... ???
"auto" is for dmame (dos mame), "1" is for mame (win mame and mame32).

Actually, we may be overanalyzing the problem. If you're using MAME 32, which I would assume you are since it's typically what most folks start with, there are check boxes to turn on gamepad support in the interface.
Here's how to do it:
1. Plug the controller into your PC before you fire up MAME.
2. select Options, Default Options, and then click on the Controllers tab. Click the box where it says "enable joystick input"
3. Then, you may have to also enable the controller for each individual game. To do that, right click on the game, again select "Properties", and again go to the "controllers" tab and check the box that says "enable joystick input".
Hope this helps!

ok.... I suddenly think of something....
if you're using XP... maybe you've the same situation...
I start the machine.... and it sees the joystick in ctrl panel and everything....
tested it in property and it works...
started Mame32... the joystick option is checked....
but the joystick and buttons do NOT work....
ok... now... quit Mame32.... (exit that program...)
but DO NOT REBOOT !!....
now... restart Mame32.....
Joysitck and buttons now work....
I donno why... but restarting Mame32 without rebooting machine will solve the pblm....
hope it helps... (I'm using XP too...)

The quickest way to remap the buttons in Mame is to press "tab" while you are in the game. A menu will come up where you can change the button settings among other things.
