Man, the natural disasters just won't quit this week. So who else is a little freaked out by this storm headed up the east coast? I was supposed to be at the shore this weekend but everyone is evacuating so I guess that's out. So annoying!

I don't care about the storm - I care about the potential of large trees crushing my house.
-
We experienced hurricane Hugo back in 89, so that's the benchmark that every storm is compared to around here in SC. Looks like it'll miss us now though.
I'm a little worried for my sister in Wilmington though. They've got a newborn and live in one of those massive developments with no trees where all the houses look the same. Somehow I suspect those houses are not as storm worthy as older ones. At least it appears the storm did not get as strong as predicted.

I'm mostly concerned with loosing power for an extended period of time.

Yeah, hopefully they get the power back on here in Wilmington sometime on Saturday. It's a foregone conclusion that it will go out overnight. Otherwise I'm going to be having potato chips for dinner. Wife and kids already split for inland safety.
Good news is I'm here at the house working on Switchcade final assembly instead of at work!
Cotmm: drop a PM if your sister needs any assistance. I'm a general contractor and have chainsaws, truck, etc. Any newer house around here is built to much more strenuous wind load code requirements than any older house, no worries there.

Call in sick, get a limb trimmer, cut those things down, and throw the limbs into an unliked neighbor's back yard.
That actually sounds better as a solution to the ding dong ditch problem.

Ready with a generator, 15 gallons of gas and plenty of food and water. If that isn't enough to chase the storm out to sea, nothing is, and here's why...
I bought the generator a couple years ago after being without power for 2 days. My electric company estimated another 2-3 days before restoration, so I went out and bought a nice 8000 watt unit capable of running 120 and 240v. I got it running at 11 a.m., made jumpers to power my hot water heater and AC and ran extension cords for the TV's and other stuff. 3 hours later, our power was restored -a full 2 days ahead of schedule. I've never been so pissed off and happy at the same time.

Yesterday I built some storm shutters for a pair of huge windows we have. I told my wife I was going to paint Pacman on one, and dots on the other.
Ask me how well that went over :hissy:

I'm mostly concerned with hearing that damn Scorpions song one more time.

Man up, sissy.
Made me laugh as I had just finished a conversation with my fiance about all this.
I have lived all over the east coast and the gulf....nothing new when it comes to hurricanes... and now I live in tornado alley, so we just deal with whatever is thrown at us.
Hell, the last big ice storm we had here we lost power for 11 days.
