Title: Question - PC Upgrades
Post by: jr76 on September 09, 2003, 01:03:31 pm
I may be buying a PC from work. It's a Dell Optiplex Pentium III, 1Ghz. It has 128mb ram and a 10 gig drive. It also has built in sound card, built in graphics, and a built in NIC. The cost with 17" monitor and CD-RW is $200.

I have a Western Digital Special Edition hard drive I'll be slapping in as well as a Sound Blaster Audigy. I will also upgrade to 512mb of ram (that's it's limit)

I'm planning on using this as my cab/gaming PC. I will be using MAME (mostly for newer fighters and 4 player games). I will also be emulating NES, SNES, Genesis, and maybe using Zinc. I will mostly be playing Tiger Woods, Links, and Golden Tee.

Is this a good purchase? What upgrades do you suggest? Video card (Remember, it has to render Tiger Woods and Links)?

No.

You can almost get a 2.1ghz athlon for that.

At pricewatch.com you are probably looking for a pc - no os - system.. but even with that, there are full systems xp2100 for 200 including shipping.

Also look under motherboard combos.

Watch out for embedded video.  Its worth 20 bucks not to have it... And spending another 20 on an old geforce TNT or something... Just an AGP slot is what you really need.

Added note:  The monitor is probably woth 80 bucks.  I didn't see it in there.  Depends on if you need it I guess.

1ghz insn't enough to run many of the new mame games btw.

Onboard sound isnt' that bad... if your going windows.

Pricewatch is your friend...
