Title: MaLa game search function
Post by: frotter on August 23, 2011, 06:26:51 pm
Hi All,

I am in the process of setting up MaLa as the frontend to my MAME cabinet and was hoping someone might be able to help out with this question. I have searched through all the options menu's and read plenty of doc's and FAQ's but no luck yet!

What I am trying to do is find a way to search for games within a MaLa game list. For example, I've got a list of about 200 or so games and it would be great to be able to just type the letter 'N' (or whatever letter a game starts with) and the list will jump down to the games beginning with 'N'. Or is there an actual search function that I haven't found yet?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Perhaps, I'm wrong but i think that isn't possible in MALA at this moment! I'm sorry!

Greetings!

Thanks for the reply..... that is very frustrating.

I know this is a MaLa forum, but do any other front ends(Hyperspin, etc) provide a similar function?

That generally wouldn't be practical on a typical cabinet setup. There is not "N" key (or any other keys for that matter), so how would the user enter letters to search for.

What DOES work very well in mala is to split your game lists up (Shooters, Maze, Favorites, etc), and then use the "next letter jump/prev letter jump" functions (check the mala config screen to set up which buttons jump by letter in the list).

That, in combination with pageup/down works very nicely for scrolling through long lists.

Without a keyboard dangling off your cab, I'm not sure how you'd enter search terms. Maybe one of those IR mini keyboards?
