So it's been years since I upgraded Mame and I decided to give it a go when .142 was released. Well, I messed with a good thing. Now all fighting games are laggy and un-playable. Any suggestions? All games ran great before I upgraded.
Thanks!

newer version's of mame require more powerful rigs, if it's been even 4-5 years since you upgraded, and your on a 4-5 year old machine mame is going to run very differently
-
That's not necessarily true.
Did you update your romset?
It could also be an issue with your video drivers, are you running the most recent ones?
-
I noticed with .142 that now I get a screen with the word "initiating" for what seems like a real long time. Is this new? Or do I have some setting that's off perhaps?

What are your specs? If you're running an older machine, try going back to .136 That was the last version before they started compiling as C++ If your system still isn't up to snuff, .106 was the last release before the video driver update. It also uses hiscore.dat instead of save states. Also, make sure your romset matches the version of the exe you are running or some roms may not work.

The specs on my computer r decent. Quad-core Intel processor running at about 2.8ghz. 8 megs ram. It's really only about a year old. Could it be some settings in my cfg file that are causing the long load time?
-
We'll assume you meant 'gigs', not 'megs'.
What exactly did you update? Just the executable? Did you also update your romset?
If you updated your roms, maybe it's time for a defrag?
-
Sorry. I did mean gigs, not megs. My bad. I only updated the executable. The rom set is still from .141 I believe. But I'm having the same issue w/ all games I try to run. Not just certain ones. And the games play fine, they just take a long time to load.

mame.exe -cc at the command line
That will update your mame.ini and allow you to see all the new settings.
There have been significant video options added between .136 and .141
Btw your system is considered to be on the high end of the spectrum. It should run all the playable games just fine.
In terms of loading times, are you having issues with all games or just certain ones.
Example: In older versions of mame cps2 games had roms that were pre-decrypted.... they loaded faster. Now they are decrypted on the fly because the mame driver is more complete. Stuff like this happens often.
Also if the roms aren't named properly mame sometimes has to "look" for them in your romsets. This results in longer load times. Any time to do a significant version update you should run your roms though a rom manager.
