Looks promising. I hear is is not a redo but a reboot.
-
I did enjoy the reboot of Star Trek (excluding the "going back in time again" part of it) and hope that this one is as good. I always enjoyed the original movies Planet of the Apes movies and recall the TV show just a bit too. I'm excited to see it.
Edit for stupidity.

Wha...Huh? Am I missing something here? Was Star Wars rebooted? Did they ever time travel? :dizzy:
-
Bad, bad typo. I meant Star Trek. I was trying to work and post at the same time.
:-[
-
:lol Contrary to what some trekkies might say, typing in "Wars" instead of "Trek" is probably not a major offense. You just got me hoping against hope that an enjoyable reboot of the Star Wars prequels was made.
I was trying to work and post at the same time.
There is your problem there. Just stop working and your posts will be typo free.
-
Star Wars could not be enjoyably rebooted until Lucas is dead. And Spielberg, actually.
-
A movie about monkeys going apeshit? I'm in...
-

Agreed. I still want them to make movies from the Timothy Zahn books, but Lucas wont have it. They were superbly written, especially compared to the tripe that he churned out and labeld 4 5 and 6. Ugh.
Anyway, this is actually a prequel, not exactly a "reboot". Looks ok I guess, Im going to see it, but I think they used too much damn CGI. Use some practical effects for once damn it! I dont really think that James Franco fits the role of scientist anyway. Or anyone smart.
-

You know he's actually a PHD candidate at Yale?
Now, whether he plays smart in a movie is, granted, a whole other discussion :)

Holy ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- really? :o
haha yeah youre right, that IS a whole other discussion!
The movie looks interesting though. Too bad Charleton Heston isnt alive to make a cameo, that would be pretty cool.
-
After seeing him in 127 Hours I am fairly convinced that James Franco is capable of playing just about any role well.

I know we have talked about this before in another thread, but why does everyone have such a hard on for James Franco in that movie? I think ANYONE in that role could have performed the same way he did. It wasnt that emotional to me, the nature of the situation is what sold it, not really his acting. :dunno

The originals didn't cover this, and I don't remember if the awful Marky Mark remake did (?). This new one would have to be considered a prequel not a reboot, right?
The trailer looks cool, my only issue is with how this fits into the first Planet Of The Apes. In between the time the apes start to take over in this one and the original movie, mankind still has to launch a ship into space and wipe itself out.
It is implied in the original that man ended the modern world and apes evolved into our place. I suppose there is some wiggle room there with the apes destroying the world, but I don't like the new movie changing that premise of the original... Its one of the great twist endings of all time.

You seem to be forgetting the two original movies where two of the apes go back in time to before apes took over and then their son leads the rebellion of the ape population. They were Escape from the Planet of the Apes and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. I think this would be considered a reboot of the story told in those.

That's nonsense. Actors try and fail to convincingly portray harrowing experiences all the time. Much more often than not.

Hows that nonsense? Such as? I just dont think that he acted that well. Put any actor in the situation he was in (cutting his arm off) and youll think that he "acted well". I just wasnt impressed. I mean I enjoyed it, I just dont think he deserved all the praise he got for that role.

You're right about me forgetting... I've seen the original movie 3 or 4 times. I haven't watched any of the sequels in a very long time.
Maybe I'll watch them again before seeing this new one.

I wouldn't recommend it. It's best if they stay forgotten.

I remember watching the reruns in the late 70s. It wasn't that bad (then). It's up there with Space 1999....

A #1, Franco didn't actually cut his arm off for that scene. That was special effects. I don't think hollywood puts any actors in situations like that. That's why they call it acting. ;D
B #2, cutting off his arm was like five minutes of a feature length film. Did you watch the whole thing? He was the film. There was nothing to sell it to you but him. He was stuck in one spot, with no other characters or settings (aside from a few trips into his brain) for a feature length film. And it was really good. Not many actors could have been convincing, and entertaining enough to carry the entire weight of a film in circumstances like that.
I get that you weren't impressed, and everyone is entitled to his opinion. But your opinion is wrong.

Jeez, I'm going to have to go back and re-watch those films, it's been years. I thought the 2nd film was when they meet the "advanced" and last humans and the third was when they go back in time with the apes. What story plot did they use to travel back in time anyways? Slingshot around the sun ala Star Trek?
I finally read the book about five or so years ago, and I liked how the story ended there. You actually think the humans had a fighting chance at survival when they launch back into space until you realize it's the monkeys who are telling the story.
-
I definitely have to see the new movie. Now you guys mention it, I watched the complete movie series about ten years ago on vhs. I had completely forgotten about it. The first is definitely the best, but I remember seeing the second as a kid and being impressed with the sub machine guns for some reason. Dunno why.
Now my memory has been jogged, I don't think this new movie will fit into the timeline of the older movies when it comes to the apes origins. But who cares?
Now I have to go and drink some grape juice +

I'll remind you that George W. Bush gradguated from Yale as well. All an ivy league degree means in this day and age is that your family has money. You can be dumb as a rock and still get one.
-
Good point.
From what I've seen of Franco in interviews, he seems pretty put together, but, you're absolutely right about Yale (or just about any $$$ uni).

That will only hold if Franco is monied. Is he?

Har Har Shmokes. I also love how you put A, then a number.
Everyone knew the premise of the movie going into it, so you already feel for the real guy regardless of who plays him. Yes, I watched the whole thing. Part of me thought "wow what a dumbass to go out into the sticks, alone, without a phone, and not tell anyone". I just feel, given the nature of the situation(being stuck alone, pinned under a rock in the desert) any actor could have done the same thing, if not better. I think there are a number of actors that could have pulled that off. They could have got some no name dude to do it. :dunno

Thats an insanely naive statement. George W. Bush is not stupid. He may not be that great of a public speaker and made some bad choices but that doesnt mean he doesnt have a strong intellect. The ability to speak well publicly is a not a prerequisite for having a strong intellect nor is the ability to make good decisions. I would bet dollars to donuts if you ever had the chance to sit down with him privately and have a conversation with him he would probably impress you beyond belief.
Finally....I guarantee you Yale is not selling degrees.....no matter who the family is. It might help you get in...maybe...but you still have to graduate based on your own merits.
On topic, I loved the original Planet of the Apes movie. But considering the era in which the movie came out I always thought for sure humans destroyed themselves through a 3rd world war through the use of nuclear weapons (a plot that is in my mind confirmed based on the storyline of the second movie in which the underground surviving humans worship a nuclear missle)....afterwards, apes evolved and took our place as the dominant species. This new movie seems to infer that apes were helped along by man in their genetic evolution and then turned on man thus beginning their role as the dominant species.....lame....
-
George W. Bush is not stupid.
Oh lord. :dizzy:
Before this gets moved into PnR somehow...
George W. Bush, is BEYOND stupid. Thats an insult to stupid people everywhere. They might not get it, but hey, its insulting nontheless.
I would bet dollars to donuts if you ever had the chance to sit down with him privately and have a conversation with him he would probably impress you beyond belief.
Yeah. It would impress me how he has lived so long considering how stupid he is. ::)
-
Everyone is entitled to their opinions I suppose.....we must all choose for ourselves what to believe. I would however caution against taking public opinion as fact.
-
I always found this comparison of Bush's speaking abilities over a ten year period rather interesting:
Bush Video 10 years ago! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw4Bhmm22xo#)

Does anyone else see the irony that a planet of the apes thread derailed into George W. Bush?

George W. Bush is not stupid.
Instead of just saying you are crazy (I'm leaning that way. j/k ;) ) let's look at it this way.
He is, without a doubt, one of the most incompetent presidents and governors in US history. I would say THE most incompetent, but hey that much is up for debate. And that's not an opinion, it's a fact.... look at his track record in terms of what he wanted to get done and what he actually got done and in terms of failure to respond to situations out of his control.
(Just for trivia, btw... best president in modern history... Carter... got like 88% of what he wanted passed, which is insaine.)
Now all a president does is delegate work to members of his cabinet and hire his cabinet. So intelligence and leadership skills (which he definitely had) are the only things needed to do the job. So either he is really stupid, or so evil that he would intentionally sabotage the government for 8 years straight, indirectly killing thousands.
So he's either stupid or evil, which one?
Personally I'm gonna give the poor guy the benefit of the doubt and go with stupid.
I'm not trying to start a political debate btw... I'm just saying.... No need to defend a stupid man's intelligence... there isn't anything wrong with being stupid, lots of people are stupid... it's just stupid people shouldn't be president. ;)
-
Point is, Bush barely scraping through with a Batchelor degree can't really compare to someone competent enough to do a PhD. It's silly to dismiss a uni because Bush went to it. No amount of money is going to get you a PhD...
-
That video about Bush (which really has nothing to do with the OT) tells me that the presidency must be a very stressful job and probably takes a terrible toll on the person.
Obama has been in there not quite 3 years yet and he cant remember his daughters correct age, or even what year it is.
And he takes vacations every other month (seems like).
Come on guys, lets get back to the Apes before this gets thrown into P&R.

I like that . . . "Political jab against the other side . . . political jab against the other side . . . now, come on guys, no more political jabs. We don't want this thing going to P&R." ;D
-

I hope George W Bush gets the role of Dr. Zaius. No costume needed. I don't want to exclude Obama, but I think the only part he could handle is that guy who gets lobotomized. Even then he will still be calling out "Line!" every minute. ;D

I was reading an article about the reasoning why the movie didnt use too many live apes. After that hollywood chimp went berzerk and ripped a ladys face off, not too many people are training chimps anymore because they dont want to have another rampage. Personally, I think that sucks, because Im not a fan of excessive CGI. Im a practical man. ;D
-
So I take it Clint isn't gonna make Every Which Way but Loose into a trilogy. :lol
I am not a fan of excessive CGI either. It can sometimes be well blended in moderation, but I still think a muppet looks 10x more convincing than any cgi character.
-
This movie will be 99% CGI....no question.

Dont get me wrong, I like it when its absolutley neccessary when practical effects cant do a job, like an army of terminators, or a space battle or something. But apes I think they could do. I agree with you sir, muppets all the way.
Youre right Flake, the 1 percent that isnt going to be CG is James Franco. They should matte out the dark circles under his eyes though, those are weird. :scared

-
Wasnt Dr Xauis an orangutan?
-
Yes.
They had different "races" evolved from orangutan, gorillas... but if memory serves me right, chimps were still primitive.
If the new movie were to go for scientific accuracy, the evolved "monkeys" would be bonobo apes. There's a fascinating TED talk about them here, with one of them playing a pretty good game of Ms Pac Man!

Anyway, I can see where the confusion would come in since Mike later talks about Chimps.
Also, I think it is about time to whip out the Planet of the apes musical, this thread wouldn't be complete without it:

Very nice! I would have done that a long time ago, but, as you all know, my work filter is derived from some Gestapo software the Nazis developed in the 40's. I cant see anything!
