First post, so take it easy on me if this has been discussed before. Didn't find anything in search.
So anyway, after years of dreaming about building a mame cabinet I'm finally beginning to get serious about it. I've been thinking about my CP layout, and I had an idea which I thought might be kinda cool. You know how people used to line up quarters on the bezel to "call next". Well, I was thinking about putting my coin buttons on the bezel and maybe gluing a quarter on the top of them to replicate this look. Has this been done before? Do you think it would look cheesy? Any potential problems with doing this?
I'm a total noob on this stuff. I don't know electronics or woodworking, but I'm pretty handy and I plan on teaching myself as I go.

The quarter ON the button or above the button?

On the button. So you would press the quarter to "insert a coin".

It's a cool idea. Something different.

I think Supercade or another popular cabinet had it done this way. If I get time, I'll search for it.
Yep, Supercade.

I think you can buy inserts for illuminated buttons that look like quarters

Not quite what I had in mind. I really want the coins to not look like buttons. I want them to look as if someone just set a couple quarters on the bezel. Might mean I have to find a button that is just slightly smaller than a quarter to use.

OH now I get what you mean. So it doesn't even look like a button, the coin looks like its just sitting on the surface. I actually think that's a great idea. You could do this a few ways with a recessed button and the coin/token attached to it. Depends on if the coin should rotate, or be fixed. I may just 'borrow' this idea as well.. thanks! :D

Feel free to borrow my idea on one condition. You gotta post pics of how it turns out, and let me know how you end up doing it. Chances are, you might get around to it before I do. I tend to drag projects out over a looong time period.
