Title: So angry, I could punch a monkey
Post by: Donkbaca on July 16, 2011, 10:53:05 am
Decide hey! I will plug in a wireless adapter to my pc and share the Internet connection with my xbox. So, I do this get a windows update and now my cab runs like utter garbage name takes forever to load and the games all run slow with stuttering sound. So pissed. I had all the updates before, but my cab has had no Internet connection in months, since late last year, so I am guessing these are 2011 updates

I am guessing its te video drivers, so I update the drivers. Here is my problem. XP seems to think the video drivers should be one thing, based on this update, yet the card manufacturers website has a different driver. Neither one seems to be working well. I THINK it's andeiver issue. If anyone ha any other ideas I am up for it, otherwise I am formatting and starting over.  It's an ATI radeon 9600 card btw.

What did you do to fix it?

Try a restore point to see if that helps?  I dont remember if that fixes driver issues or not.  May want to Google it first.  It wouldn't hurt but it may not help.

Or just uninstall the video drivers altogether and reinstall the proper ones.

And quit hatin' on Centipede.  Karma's a ---smurfette---.   ;)

Problem is, I don't know which drivers are the right ones, if I run the ATI update it picks one driver,
Then windows says, "hold on there! That won't work!" and picks a different driver. In either case both are giving MAME fits. I am the point where I think I am just going to reinstall everything, I wasted all night Friday trying to find an answer.

Gave centipede another shot the other day, still horrible. Now Juno First on the other hand, now THAT is a gem.

I had a prob with ATI radeon drivers at one point where the newest version (at that time, I believe v10.x) ran like crap for any 3-d games (in particular, Virtual Pinball and Future Pinball).

At the time, I had to revert back to, I believe, an 8.x driver set.

But, just recently, as I was trying to get an ELO touch screen connected, I revisited the video drivers. Ends up, ATI has released a newer 11.x driver set that corrects whatever the prob was that they introduced at one point.

I'd probably

1) turn off auto updates (so you can pick andchoose from the list instead of it just automatically installing new updates).
2) Grab a few older revs of the ati drivers from their site.
3) Uninstall the current drivers, reboot, make sure things work in the default win drivers (though it'll be slow)
4) install the older driver sets, one at a time. and test. If it doesn't work, uninstall, reboot and repeat.

I've been there. It sucks.

Did you turn it off and on again?

Seriously though, the Catalyst driver is supposed to be pretty solid for all ATI cards. So, delete ALL installed drivers so that Windows won't try and pick different ones, and install the latest. Cross your fingers.

As Hoopz mentioned I would have thought a System restore to just before the update would rectify this problem. That's exactly what it's supposed to be for.

Yeah, didn't properly back up, so no good restore point.

Problem is if I install the latest ATI driver my XP says windows doesn't support it so it just gives menthe basic 4 bit colo. If I let windows pick the best driver, I can use my card but mane runs Luke trash.

I think I'll just chalk this up to be careful next time and just reinstall xp. I have my FE and eons and such baked up. At this point it's looking like it's not going to save me any time or result in a more stable system by poking around

I have had this problem too.  You have to roll back the video driver.  It may or may not work.  Sorry.

If you have the orginal installation disks, you might have the original driver there.

I no longer install sound/video updates.  They are more likely to break anything than fix something.  (Sometimes they even REMOVE features I am using!!!!  They took out use a TV video choice!!!  ---daisies---.)

i'd start off with the latest drivers that support xp 32/64 from amd, you can search for older driver's on their site, and never ever ever take driver updates from windows update, they are crappy imitation's of manufacture drivers.
