I was browsing around looking at others people control panels and there were several controls panels that has 7 pushbuttons per player. I could not figure out what is the 7th is use for and which games that will require 7th button? ???

Neo-geo games use 4 buttons. People like them in a row.
-
Also run for mk3

I see. However I look up all the list of games from Neo Geo and there was 160 games. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Neo_Geo_games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Neo_Geo_games)) is that right or are there other company games that use 4 buttons in a row or just Neo Geo?
I guess I will stick with 6 buttons per player as it look more traditonal that way to me, don't you think?

I'm glad I went 7 buttons myself even if the 7th doesn't get used that often. Plus you can set mame to default to the bottom 4 on all neogeo games. See post 15 from this thread. It explains this concept and there is a link to how to set this up.

I had 7... then I put a plug in the 7th... then next time I redid my control panel I removed it... I don't remember ever really caring. NeoGeo I use a square 4. I like it better.

Or just go with 4 buttons. I never play any fighters, and if I had to, I'd just play the NEO-GEO ones.

So, I've looked into this whole Neogeo cfg thingy, and I can't quite get it. I have my neogeo.cfg file, and it looks like it should work, and I have my command line say -ctrl neogeo (in the ctrlr folder) but the default controls seem to override the ones in the new cfg file. Any ideas?

I also had 7 buttons, then when I redid my control panel last week I dropped it down to 6. Looks much better in my opinion and the only games I noticed a difference in is Mortal Kombat 3 and UMK3. Just assign the run button to bottom middle and all is well.

I miss my 7 button set up. in addition to run in UMK3/MK3 , the ABC portion of the neo geo bottom row just feels more natural for 3 button jamma games to me.
-
I'm dropping down to 6 on my next CP. I have an odd 7-button layout, though.
-
I have 7 as well in the MAME CP I acquired. The 7th button is nestled below the two rows of 3. I've used in when I needed 3 buttons close to the joystick. Narc comes to mind constantly crouching while firing missiles, a gun and jumping.

I'm still amazed that people play Mortal Kombat. :laugh2:

What?! Why? Mortal Kombat is a klassic.

Yeah, as you can see, the whole 7-button vs. 6-button is highly based on preference. Unless you're a hardcore Neo-Geo fighting game fanatic (and/or MK3/UMK3 fanatic), you're fine with six.
-
I went with 7 as well for neo geo, mk, and street fighter iv. So basically it's for fighting games. If you aren't into fighters then don't do it.
