Title: Wireless 27 inch monitor
Post by: BobA on July 06, 2011, 11:26:00 am
Here is the review of a Samsung wireless 27 inch monitor.   If it works out and more are coming it may give us great portable CPs with the TV on the wall or a stand. Not the best but it is one of the first so it will probably get better.     Wireless Monitor Review (http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/43160-samsung-c27a750-27-central-station-wireless-monitor-review.html)

Here's a similar idea that a friend of mine did a video review of:

I've had LG's 47LH85 wireless 47" TV for over a year now. The only cord it needs running to the TV is the power cord. HD video transmits wirelessly to it just fine. The wireless transmitter has quite a few inputs, it's about the size of a DVD player. It was originally released about 2 years ago, but has since been discontinued. Definately would be cool to implement a wireless video out feature on computers. I like the idea of a "portable" CP contained MAME rig.

Really?  An HDMI cable is really killing this idea?

No but think of having an ethernet cable attached to your laptop all the time.  A bit of an inconvenience depending on where you are.  Anyone with kids will see the advantage of reducing the number of cables to trip over.

Cable... reducing a cable. I have 3 cables going to my monitor: a power cable, I need that still; a USB cable, because I have USB ports on my monitor; and the monitor cable.  I would still need one cable for power, another for the USB.  I would eliminate one cable.

This wouldn't help my TV either.  I have 2 cables that go to my TV; a power cable, and an HDMI cable that plugs in to my revceiver.  You can build a portable MAME rig right now, you would need to have a power cable, a HDMI/VGA/DVI port and that's it.

The laptop idea is not applicabple as the laptop is a self contained unit, a mame rig you have to hook up to a monitor, you are going to set it up in offices and living rooms, you aren't going to take it to the park on a sunny afternoon.

Seriously, its saving ONE cable,  its not a big deal

Wireless controllers for consoles aren't necessary, but they are widely used. If you used a laptop (no power cord needed) inside the CP that wirelessly transmitted video to the monitor/TV, that would be pretty cool. No, not a big deal (just like wireless controllers), but still pretty damn cool. People used to have to get off the couch to change the channel on the TV (or have their kids do it), now we have remotes. Progress, it comes one step (or taking away one cable) at a time. I don't think BobA was implying this would be "take to the park" portable as much as taking it from room to room portable.

People don't generally move monitors room to room, and I don't think an hdmi/dvi/VGA cable is what is keeping monitors from migrating. Controller are different, wireless ones give you more range, and you move controllers around all the time. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying it's not a cool thing, but let's have some perspective, it's just one cable we are axing, and generally the power cable is a bigger pita than the monitor input cable
