I'm talkin about getting a dedicated cabinet, like Street fighter 2 or something and putting a mame setup computer inside of it and i want to be able to swtich something and use mame, switch back and play the dedicated cab.
Been thinkin about this and was wondering if anyone had tried this and succeeded.
Edit: Was maybe thinking taking a jamma cab and doing some sort of switchbox between the jamma connect and a Jpac?

This is a popular option for people who buy working cabs. Clever people build a new control panel and leave the artwork alone, so in the future it can be converted back to the original game. That's pretty cool if you ask me, and preserving an original at the same time :)

Your best bet might be to use a printer switch for the controls, and wire the rest to parallel plugs. That would give you lots of pins, and they screw in so it'd be sturdy.
As for video, that depends on what your display is... if it's a monitor it might be difficult (KVM switch... but how to switch it? no keyboard or mouse attached...), but I bet you can find off-the-shelf stuff that would switch a plain old composite TV signal. A double-pole relay might do it too.

i would prefer not to have to do any switches with the monitor. Maybe use some sort of dual input.

Open the cab, swap the JAMMA harness from the JPAC to the PCB...
I'd like to end up doing something like this too...

I'd thought through stuff like that too & the only idea I could come up with was a complicated relay system where You'd need 2 JAMMA extensions (biscuit on 1 end, harness on the other), a lever with 2 harness atachments & the wires attached to the lever...

Use a printer switch box with the JAMMA harnesses...
You could mount it facing the outside & extend the shaft to put the knob out side the cab.
I don't think JAMMA harnesses have more than 25 connections... & if they do, you could do the power stuff seperately or something... Just another thought...

Why are you restricted to a JAMMA? Is it possible to have MAME peacefully coexist with other types of boards? Is it just way more difficult to go the non JAMMA route?

I'm sure you're not restricted to JAMMA...
I just know that the JPAC is made to easily interface with a JAMMA harness (already hooked up to the monitor, controls, & speakers.)
It just seems like the easiest solution to me.
If anyone else has been successful at getting a MAME machine & original arcade PCB to co-exist in a cabinet, please do share your story.

If your power supply runs without load (Ie, JAMMA board off, PC on), it will fail in a matter of seconds.
I had thought about JAMMA+MAME in the past, but I simply can't think of much of a reason to do it. In almost every situation it would be simpler, cheaper, and more functional to just emulate the original game too.

I'm not entirely sure what you are trying to do (not familiar with actual jamma) but I assume it just comes down to switching wires. Switching whether the CP connects to the jamma or the pc and then whether the tv accepts output from the jamma or the pc. If this is the case, you can switch any number of wires with a series of 4pdt relays. Then, the whole thing could be switched with a standard toggle switch. I am doing a similar thing in my arcade (pc and console) so when I am finished i will post lots more details.

Go with the PC2Jamma route, and use the multi-jamma board from multigame.com here. (http://www.multigame.com/jamma.html) Clay Cowgill does good work.

a cool thing about this board(if i read it right) is that it has an input for a switch to change between games.
