Title: Ideas for a simple removable control panel ?
Post by: spystyle on June 26, 2011, 10:20:34 pm
Hello from Maine,

Well I am building a Defender (again) with detachable control panels that store in the back of the cabinet. This is possible because the control panel fits inside the cabinet (the panel's o.d. is the same as the cabinet's i.d.)

So I am thinking of making it all simple, like the coin door panel can open, inside there are 2 latches to unlock the control panel, releasing it. I am thinking of using window latches.

Do you guys have any ideas that totally trump my simple one ? I know y'all are creative :)

Thanks!
Craig

This is what I would do.

ecndoer in the cab, wired to cat 5.  CP buttons wired to cat 5.  When you put CP on, you just plug in the cat 5 wires.  Simple.

To secure the top, I would use Velcro.  Its surprisingly sturdy

I can't quite picture from your description what you have in mind, but this is how I connected a removable (much more, um, elaborate) panel recently:

In the finished cab, an extension USB cable is hanging right behind the hole in the center of the back panel.  Plug that in to a USB cable from the back of the CP, line up on the brackets, and slide the panel box into place.  Done.

That's nice :)

What I have in mind is similar, but uses window latches, one on each side of the control panel, and it's accessed by opening the coin door panel.

I'm building it for an acquaintance of mine - and to try some new simple techniques. He wants it to double as a "juke", so I'm thinking of putting a car stereo in there powered by a spare ATX power supply.

Sadly he also wants a keyboard tray for keyboard and mouse, I don't like that LOL

This thing will be wacky I suspect ...

We'd dig a manually rotating monitor too.

Oh the madness!

Hey this latch looks good, easy to procure, and cheap - a "chest latch" :
