Title: Wiring a tweeter help!
Post by: Nacimroc on June 26, 2011, 09:49:43 pm
Ok, So I got a 10'' sub (8 ohm 250 watt), 2 x 6'' mids (8 ohm 100 watt). Wired them in parallel.  Working fine no problems. I also have installed 1 tweeter i had lying around( not wired up yet). I have no idea of impedance (could check tomorrow) or any other specs.  The amp is a car amp, 200 watt max bridged which is what I am wiring it.

I want to include this tweeter but I need to know what size capacitor, resistor etc to use! Or can I just wire it straight ?  Second question, if its 200 watt max bridged, whats the chances of my blowing my mids that are only 100 watt ?  I would never put it on full blast and would probably set the volume on amp at about 60% and then wire a seperate volume pot in!

Thanks

Read this, it should help. (http://www.termpro.com/articles/xover2.html)

Power alone usually wont blow a speaker, distortion from under powering will. Designing a proper crossover for your speakers, and listening to them at quality levels is the best way to keep from damaging them. Power ratings on speakers are a joke and are used more a marketing tool than anything.

Thanks for that! Will have a look over it and see what I can muster!

Hmm... got to ask what you are doing. Is this for an arcade cabinet, or what? Is it a mono application? Since you have the amplifier bridged I guess it is...
I you have 3 8 ohm speakers in parallel, the total impedance will be 2.667 ohms. Are you sure the amplifier can handle that? Not all amps are stable down to 2 ohm.
If you have an piezo tweeter you don't need a crossover (a resistor in series can make it "softer" though...).
However I really recommend that you get/build a crossover for the sub...

Except that I second to everything that mountain already posted.

Making a cross-over filter might be an option, but next time get a complete car-speaker set. Then you have 2 or 3 way speakers, with a matching filter at a steal price. Can't hobby against that.

Thanks for reply. Your right, but at the time I thought it would be easier than this  ;D.  I tracked down the spec sheet for my tweeter and it shows I need a 8.2 uF cap, so I ordered one and going to mess about and see how I get on. The sound out of the 2 6inch and 10 inch is amazing! It does need tweeters, but for a basic set up its great!
