The drive in my nephew's Wii failed. I want to mod it so he can play games from a USB hard drive, but I don't remember if the system must be able to see a legitimate game in the drive to work. My own modded Wii is in storage so I can't test. If the thing needs to be able to read a disc there's no point in me modding it cos the drive would need replaced anyway, at which point he can just play all his games from the discs.

Nope, no disc required.
-
Never need a disc at all for any part. It's quite nice.
-
If it's not modded and the dash (or whatever it's called) is 4.3 I think you need to be able to read a disc to mod it. There's a few that you can do it with I believe. I did it with Lego Indiana Jones...
-
No, I modded my sisters and needed only an SD card. No disc necessary. It's 4.3U.
-
Early on, some games did require a disc (any disc) to be in the drive, Metroid Prime 3 was one. However, that was fixed with the later cIOSes. So as others have said, you are good!

There may be one or two configs where you do need a disc with an exploit save to do the initial mod... not sure if that's still the case but it used to be.

What he said.... you'll need a disc drive to install the initial hack, but that's it. If your disc drive is bad, you can borrow one from a working wii, perform the exploit and then you don't need it anymore.
Be aware though that updating your wii via official methods can break the exploit and you'll need a drive to fix it. This also included updates containted on the wii discs themselves.

Install Priiloader to block unwanted updates.
