For the next round, I've tried to compromise between old-school & new-school games, but we know how compromises often work out...

Majestic 12: The Space Invaders Part IV, a modern update of Space Invaders--I saw this in only 1 arcade back in the day & loved it, especially the Cattle Mutilation rounds!  :)

Good luck!

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition amongst forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

-Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

Best of luck!

Reminds me a bit of Galaga 88.

At first I couldn't find the game in Hyperspin eventhough I have the rom but it seems
this is not a parent and I have clones deselected to keep a lot of clutter out of the list.

Will give it a whirl now.  :)

180,590

EDIT: Didn't realize mame doesn't keep the hi-score for this game so it got reset. I didn't take a picture, so now I can't prove it  :(
Of course now I'm only getting around 140K pretty much all the time, but not 180K.

Oy, I'm not doing so well at my own pick!

90,280 staying on the right path (the radical path)
111,700 staying on the left path (the more traditional path)

Thanks,
-Jason

This was my first try at the game, and so far my best of about four or five consecutive games. Did the right path on my second game, and got 95k.

Gah!  I can get 100-125k pretty much every time without really taking damage.......then I cascade fail.

Couldn't seem to break 100,000, until I had a couple of good cow rounds.  Still only 125,030 but I'm happy with it.

As the 5-1 stage is crazy hard, I suggest you try to really nail the Cattle Mutilation.

I've played this for about an hour now. It controls way better than Galaga 88.

2 big factors for me, good score on cattle mutilation and keeping your weapon powered up

Yep. Also, here's a little tip: Take out the invaders column by column (best to start with the side that's heading towards a screen border as they will ascend towards you every time they reach that border. This makes the game somewhat easier (at least as long as those friggin' space rocks aren't raining on you or the circling jerks that's so hard to hit unless you have two power ups.

To score well on the Cattle Mutilation, try to not let any cows be abducted (20K points) but more important, try to hit the enemies as far away from you as possible. You can also let the aliens pick up a cow, then shot the ship (not the poor cow) and get big points. It's very hard to reach the second bonus round IMHO, so the key to win this competition is to score big on the first one (or reach the second for a 300K score).

Don't give up!

I had a really lucky round, quite a few powerups at the perfect time + I managed to hold onto my powered up main gun for most of the game.

Switched to an older MAME (0.99) and it plays much better on my laptop. Broke 400K! Alas, the F12 didn't seem to be set to save a snap, but I didn't see the short "freeze" that happens when you press F12 on later versions, so I pressed Print Screen, luckily.

423,270 pts!

What do you mean? The background always show the stage background that you ended on. The reason I posted a .jpg once is explained by the F12 button not saving the screenshot. If you think I sit at home with Photoshop and alter my score to impress other nerds online then you must think I'm a sad person.

hey, who are you calling a nerd! I'll kick your ass in a game of chess while watching Ultra Extreme Edition of Lord of the Rings anytime of teh day!

 Everyone knows that the smartest guys have glasses and rather watch SG-1 instead of putting the moves on the Mrs.

Btw, the game is a bit unfair, because unless you get really nice powerups ( S or P icons) in the first two rounds then play it really safe you're in for a tough ride. My most successful route this far IIRC is:

LEFT
RIGHT
LEFT
LEFT
RIGHT

or

RIGHT
LEFT
RIGHT
RIGHT
LEFT

The key is choosing to change direction as the second "checkpoint" appears, or the following stages will get really nasty. Too bad this game doesn't give you extends. It would be much more fun to play then.

Empahtic, I meant the Score Listing don't follow thru.....

Like your previous lower score is not listed when you get a New higher score.

Does the game only saves the first 2 or the first one only (like Asteroids Deluxe, only the first 3 gets saves)

Oh. No, I don't have a highscore.dat file even, so it's not saving my scores. If I feel that I've screwed up, I just go to the END character and the initials entry will be blank. Just playing for fun on my laptop, so the bare minimum = a folder with MAME + the roms.

I think this will be my last entry in this game's tournament: 484,040 pts!

When you've played the bonus rounds enough, you'll start to memorize 'em, and I can get almost 200K from the first one now.

When you've played the bonus rounds enough, you'll start to memorize 'em, and I can get almost 200K from the first one now.

LOL.  I'm doing the same thing with the blank entries.  Just wish I had a joystick to play with.  Still using my keyboard until my cab gets closer to finish.

If you do win, don't CAVE in and pander to others - choose something you enjoy ;)

So if I win, I get to choose the next game?

I'm still on keyboard. I'm just too lazy I guess but also, it takes precious time away from the game. I'm really enjoying it, time to start looking for a PCB.

Don't pachi panic, I think your victoly is sealed!

What a margin to win by, I think you should make a recording of a game if its possible - teach us n00bs a thing or two!

I actually recorded that run.  ;) I tried to output it to an .avi-file so I can put it on YouTube, but the 0.99 MAME doesn't support the aviwrite command it seems. I'll upload a zip archive with the mame used + inp file to MegaUpload later unless I can figure something out.

I managed to upload a 370K run here: Majestic 12 | MAME | Taito 1990 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCJEilBG0Qc#)

in 1080p.

I even managed to add some scanlines to the video. Cool, huh?

OK, I'm going to be the "nerd" that's gonna take it upon himself to ask for the next competition. This one already fell off the 1st page and the next one is nowhere to be found, so what's up? If emphatic can't/don't want to do it, then second place winner should, or again like last time maybe emphatic could tell us what's next and then some good soul could set it up again? Any other ideas?

Sorry, I had no idea what to do. I just pick a game that I like and you other guys have a go at it? I was waiting for stuff to happen. I feel bad now.

The new thread is up already: Hacha Mecha Fighter is the name of the game.
