Title: Windows XP and Services
Post by: rmusick on June 07, 2011, 04:52:44 pm
Hey can anyone please tell me what Services are REQUIRED for Windows and MAME to run?  I am having issues when I put MALA in my start up, It will load then freeze half in Mala/Half in Windows.  Also when I play a video in MALA as start up it freezes or all you hear is sound depending on the resolution.  Thoughts?

You missing video codecs?  Try installing FFDSHOW, that usually covers them all.

I think it doesn't cover mp4, mov, flac, and 3ggp. I'm using K-Lite mega pack 700.

As for services, google 'XP services' and the like. You'll find lots to read.

If you are trying to strip Windows down and having problems getting things to run, you are on a fruitless quest.  You'll go through a lot of trouble to gain nothing in the end (maybe some hard drive space).  It won't help MAME at all.

I used to use KLite, I've switched to CCCP.  Seems more complete to me, and comes with MediaPlayerClassic (not affiliated with Windows Media Player or Microsoft), which is a great all-around video player, and a great choice for a full-screen video jukebox option in your cab.  Can accept a list of video files via command line with wildcards, and play then in alphabetical or random order.
But I digress... just wanted to bring CCCP to your attention as a potential codec solution (if that is indeed your issue).

I remember I used nlite and taking everything off my xp not related to usb controls, video or audio. Since my computer was there only to run emulators and mala. As far removing windows services after install, i'm not so sure.

I don't know about performance, but you can cut way down on boot time. I got my pentium 4 setup from over a minute and a half down to just under 30 seconds. Wouldn't surprise me if shaving all that extra crap from loading right off the top did help MAME.

Pretty much trying to Speed up the boot time.. And get rid of any "Memory" hogs that would keep Mala from playing Video, but that was already addressed
