OK, I am going with a retro theme, and the only thing that visually reveals that my cab is modern is the "Starting..." box that pops up for a second when Mame launches a game. Would love to disable this... I am using (I think) a no nag compile of Mame, and I did a major search for answers with no luck. Anybody know how to disable this message (I could not manage to get a screenshot of it)? I'm using Mala as front end, FYI.

OK, I would be happy with just changing the font to something pixellated. I tried the instructions here http://www.mameworld.info/mrdo/mame_artwork_supp.html (http://www.mameworld.info/mrdo/mame_artwork_supp.html) with no luck- either I have done something wrong or the procedure has changed since then. Anyone have ideas on how to change the MAME UI font?

Changing the font might be more trouble than its worth, i mean, that would break the TAB menu too, resulting in you never ever being able to tweak any setting on any game.
I gotta think that the answer is in here (the hiscore and no-nag diffs thread, which I'm sure you looked at)

The changes you want to make have to be in virtually the same file as removing the other screens that pop up. Compiling your own version of MAME isn't that difficult, especially with headKaze's MAME builder GUI. (if that's still updated?)

Hmm. I think I already have a no nag compile of Mame (I didn't compile it myself- found one online, the compile process did not seem to work for me)... it doesn't bug me about less than 100% emulation of games anymore (no more moving the stick left-right). It just still has a "starting..." message that pops up (for less than a second). Unless it is a Mala message, hadn't thought of that.
I know I am getting picky here, but I've got the software side 99% of where I want it to be :dizzy:

I'm using a hiscore/nonag build (built myself using the link NOP posted) and there is no "starting" text when launching a game through MAMEUI.

Mala does that with plenty of options to change or delete entirely.

Hmm, don't see "plenty" of options, but thanks for the confirmation- I did finally find the option I needed, in Mala like you said, not Mame. Here's the scoop for anyone else who is bugged by the "starting..." dialog-
In Mala
go to Options- GUI section- Game Start/quit subsection- check "use fullscreen starting picture instead of starting window." Specify the file path of what picture you want to pop up.
In my case, I just made a "please wait" message in the same font as my layout.
As always, thanks to the forum for being smarter than I am!

plenty of options: you can change the starting font/text/background image as well as disabling it entirely

I will take your word for it... but any clues as to where these options are? I may be overlooking an options tab somewhere. ???

If you first uncheck the use fullscreen starting screen, you get more options for the background/font of the small starting window. If you supply a different image as part of your layout you can use that instead. I don't have the exact stuff in front of me, but if you look around the options are documented in the wiki at www.malafe.net (http://www.malafe.net).

Hmm. Nothing about the game start options there that I saw. http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Mala_Config#Game_Start (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Mala_Config#Game_Start) No biggie, I think I got it to where I am comfortable with it-- in fact the brief starting screen allowed me to use an art asset I was trying to work into the cab. Thanks! I think the front end is complete for the cab- hope to show it off in a video eventually.

In this screen:
if you don't check "use fullscreen . . .", you get the small starting window. You can edit the text/font/background image, maybe size of that box? in layout editor. Edit the layout you're using. I'm vague after that but it's in there. I think you're doing the layout editor thing already if you have art in this box.
