Title: vga converter board to use computer monitor in arcade cab
Post by: jspicher on June 06, 2011, 11:20:55 am
Hey guys,
I've got a couple monitors that have just about gone kaput on me, and it's about time to replace them.
While going over my options l've come across these video converter boards, which supposedly will allow me to use a vga LCD or standard CRT monitor in my cabs:

Has anyone used these before, what do ya think?
From my reading it sounds like the hardest part about these is figuring out a way to mount your monitor into the cab... are there any other downfalls?

some oddball frequencies won't work with this converter. if it's standard red 15k or medium res 25k or high res 31k it's fine.

Pre- "Golden Tee Complete" will not work for sure (due to odd refresh rate) I've tried and tried with no luck.

But this would work with old donkey kong, pac man type games yeah?
Does anyone have experience?

PS> lilshawn, so does that mean you have one laying around you're not using? Interested in selling?

they might work, AFAIK they don't use odd ball resolution rates. so they SHOULD work. but theory and reality rarely coincide.

sorry, the company actually owns it. It was bought as a "just in case" item to replace a blown up monitor.

keep an eye out on flea-bay, they can be had for sub $40

okay..oddball resolution for golden tee complete and prior for future generations:

resolution: 640x350
h-frequency: 25.7KHz
v-frequency: 60.6hz
pixel clock: 21.5khz

640x350, thats the same resolution as one of the res for PC EGA graphics (a predecessor to VGA)

yes, but it's the 25.7khz that's the kicker.

the cga/ega frequencies the convertor can handle are

14.5 - 16.5khz -which is cga
23.5 - 25.5khz -which is ega
30.5 - 32.5khz -which is vga

as you can see, the frequency falls just outside into the space between ega and vga  :dizzy:  :censored:
