Title: Installing Virtual Pinball on MAME machine
Post by: djtroyboy on May 27, 2011, 02:19:49 pm
Hello -

I am just getting my MAME machine up and running for the 1st time.  It's a cocktail cabinet that I have set up to rotate to vertical view for pinball games like Pinball Action.  Just came across Virtual Pinball for the 1st time and would love to try it on my machine.  Does anyone know if I can install Virtual Pinball as well and have it rotate to the vertical view and allow me to use my pinball buttons on the side as flippers?  Everywhere I'm reading it talks about configuring your keyboard keys to play the game but I would of course like to play it with my controls if possible.

As long as you have a key encoder device (like IPac or KeyWiz) it should not be a problem.  You can change the keys in Visual Pinball to represent the buttons you want to use (just like in Mame).
As far as rotating the view, I'm not sure what you mean.  You may have to use a Front end program like Hyperspin, Hyperpin, Maximus Arcade or others to do that.  I know there are tables in Visual pinball that are 4:3 and some are 16:9.  You may want to ask that question at VPF.org

Thanks much for the response.  I was hoping it would be workable and sounds like it is.  Just wasn't sure if it would auto setup to play in the horizontal or vertical view on my cocktail cabinet.  But I can play around with that once I get it set up.  Looks like I would also need to upgrade to some kind of higher quality video card since I just have the integrated card that came with the pc.

Yeah, the integrated graphics on most mobos won't be enough to drive VPin or Future pinball. You won't need a super high end card, but something beefier than the integrated stuff.
