Title: Nanao MS-2931 Chassis Problems
Post by: clutch on May 19, 2011, 08:55:22 pm
Ok, I f'ed up.

I used the quickres utility that comes with the arcadevga card to set my windows xp resolution at a weird setting that causes the screen to be all scrambled.  While I'm in XP!  So now I can't click it to set it back to  640x480.  Any ideas?

I f8'ed  and chose 'vga mode' which got me to xp, but when I run the quickres utility, the list of resolutions is blank.

Help!!

smashey smashey?

sounds like you might have overdriven the HOT and blown it.

but try jumping hsync and Vsync together and see if it comes back. some of these monitors had an issue with the protection circuit too.

I would remove the PC from the equation entirely since you're clearly having issues with that.  Unplug the signal input to the monitor, power it up, and see if it runs.  You can crank the "screen" control on the flyback up and see if you get a raster pattern.  If you do, the monitor's working.  If not, it's blown and needs fixed.

It sounds like you probably fed it a signal outside its supported range.  This tends to blow up the HOT.  Check it, and you'll probably find it defective.  It's usually a simple replacement, but sometimes other parts go out, too.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I feel about an inch high right about now.   :banghead:  I knew better when I was dinking with but much like a gorilla with a hammer, I kept banging away at it until I broke it.

The monitor isn't even trying to power up now.  No pop, flash, or static electricity...

you might hear a faint clicking or tic-tic-tic..... sound from the power supply as it tries to start up go into protection and try to start up again... if so, you likely have a HOT issue. if not... something might be gone in the power supply.

judged by the description you gave surrounding the circumstances of it's demise, i suspect the HOT is blown.

I don't care if the COLD has blown too as long as it can be repaired.  :D  I have just sent the chassis to Jomac in Australia.  Very nice guy.  The postage sucks, but it evens out to what I was quoted in the states.  I'll keep everyone posted.

For next time - set everything up on a computer monitor. Usually on the monitor onscreen display you can call up what resolution its being run at.

Verify it's booting/loading/operating at 640x480. Then just lock it down and switch monitors to your arcade monitor and you will be good.

thanks. the part I can't understand is why a resolution LOWER than 640x480 would cause it to go crazy?

This monitor is designed to only display 3 frequencies only. CGA, EGA and VGA. Nothing else.

Well, I figured out what I should have done!  Just hook up another monitor via the dvi-in and reset the farking resolution.  Let this be a lesson to everyone.  Don't get in a hurry trying to fix something.

Sounds like my chassis is on its way back to me.  Joey said the black goop of death had leaked under the HOT and flyback.  I don't know if this means that my monitor would have died eventually, but he said he patched everything up and it is working again.

Does anyone have a silicone grease they recommend for putting the annode cup back on or should I just snap it back on and not worry about cleaning/re-greasing?

eeeeww.. no. in fact clean it off, alls it does is attract dirt.

if you must, check the automotive section for silicone spark plug boot grease.

Put everything back together and still nothing.

The monitor sounds like it is coming on from the neck area in back.  You can hear pop/static/ting.  But there is nothing on screen.  Not even any static electricity.  I am out of ideas.

If you crank up the screen on the flyback can you get a raster?

tried that. nothing.  screen looks really dead.

I figure the chassis is good because I hear the quick pop/static/ting which I didn't before.

is it something shutting off like a protection circuit?

Update:

For clarification, I'm trying to get the 2931 to work again.

I have a WORKING 2933 chassis and tube.  I did a swap.

The 2931 'repaired' chassis with the 2933 tube exhibited the same symptoms.  Static/pop/nothing.

The 2933 chassis with the 2931 tube worked like a charm.

So...something is preventing the repaired 2931 chassis from powering up the tubes.  I guess that is fairly good news in that I now know my 2931 tube isn't in the sh#tter.

This is soooo fun.

I'm taking pics along the way, so once I'm done, I'll do a whole chassis swap tutorial with a 2933 and 2931.

what about neck glow? is the heater coming on?

after the initial crackle can you hear anything... flub flub flub or tic tic tic?

can you put a meter on the B+ line and see what it does on startup? spike up then fall off or nothing at all...

No neck glow at all.  When I put the probe on the B+ it goes kind of crazy and sometimes counts down to 0.  I've tried adjusting the B+ pot to different positions with no change.  There are no sounds afterward.  Only after it has been off for 20-30 seconds you can hear a faint click.

Yeah, just tested the 2933 and it shows a constant 180-something.  I tried the bad one again and it slowly counted down from 120-something.

sounds like something is loading down the power supply... it seems like it's trying to startup, but the load is causing it to shutdown.

that's kind of a bad thing. you really need the B+ to remain where it was, before everything went sideways on you... otherwise all sorts of other things can go wrong and it throws another wrench into the works... getting a proper B+ is now another thing you have to contend with.

I was afraid of that.  I put it back to where it was originally hopefully.  I'm kind of at the mercy of Joey/Jomac now.  I can't afford to send this back again.

I'm using CPS2 Mars Matrix.  I also ruled out the possibility it is the cab's fault by hooking up the other monitor I have to it.  Powered up just fine.  The ONLY thing I can find is the neckboard is a little loose where the white piece is that plugs into all the pins in the neck.  Sorry for that run-on sentence.  I do think this is normal though because my other neckboard has a little wiggle to it.

I guess I'll give Jomac a call tonight and hope for the best.

Joey got the chassis again, plugged it up and it works fine.
