This is what I should have named my last post. Okay. RULES...
1) Post the game you play the most in MAME
2) Post the game that others like, but for the life of you, you can't understand why they like it
3) Post Most Overrated Game
4) Most underrated game
Got it? 4 games, favorite, least favorite popular game, most underrated game, most overrated game
I just want to know what you people think so I can possibly expand my horizons, so that Cheffo stops chastising me..

Couldn't just pick one game, so here's a few:
1. Play the most: Progear (absolutely amazing CAVE side-scrolling shooter), Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, Ninja Baseball Batman (I load this one up all the time to show people how weird Japanese games are)
2. Least favourite popular game: any of the Mortal Kombats
3. Most overrated game: any of the Mortal Kombats
4. Most underrated game: Windjammers, Hattrick. Both these games are incredibly fun when playing versus a friend, not as fun when playing against the CPU.

Couldn't just pick one game, so here's a few:
1. Play the most: Ketsui (absolutely amazing CAVE vertical shooter), Gemini Wing (Because my JAMMA PCB doesn't have a screen flip option)
2. Least favourite popular game: any of the Mortal Kombats
3. Most overrated game: any of the Mortal Kombats
4. Most underrated game: Hacha Mecha Fighter. It will get crazy hard, but is very addictive for short sessions.

1. Play the most: Probably a 6-way tie between Karate Champ, 1942, Burgertime, Tempest, Robotron, and Centipede.
2. Least favorite popular game: any of the Mortal Kombats
3. Most overrated game: any of the Mortal Kombats or Street Fighters after SFII Turbo.

Oh, I'll still chastise you ... for example, why limit it to games played in MAME ? Some games can really only be enjoyed on original hardware.

I dont like rulez.
Heres an ultra quick pick of some of the most popular/fun games from the 80s to 92 (as far as Ive gotten).. which should provide you with plenty of skoolin. Most shooters and Fighters left out cause I dont have time for testin, and I cant remember all the great shooters -vs- the average and crappy ones. Theres a lot missing, but as I said, it was done very quickly.

Well, to be fair, all can be played nicely using MAME with a proper control set up.
If you want people to post games that can be played on YOUR MAME cab, then perhaps you should post what controls you have.

theoretically, i can put any controls on my mame cab I want. I just don't want people posting something because they like playing it on the original cab better for whatever reason.... like star wars, unique controls, vector monitor.... I want to know what people like playing on their mame cabs. Don't care about what arcade games they liked in the arcade.

For this being a "non-definitive" list, you have a pretty specific definition of what this is supposed to have. And for looking for a list of opinions, you've been throwing some out rather quickly. After your last attempt at getting a short list of popular MAME games, and seeing where is one is going, I don't think you're going to get what you're looking for. :dunno
Best way to expand your MAME horizons, play games you've never played before and give each a good effort with an open mind. You just might find some new favorites...

1) Galaga 88 (for me the definition of an arcade game).
2) Angry Birds (Berzerk if you talk "Arcade" which is not one of your rules)

3) Metal Slug - not that they are bad, but nothing to dance in the street about, and they are all pretty much the same thing.

Donkbaca, I feel your pain but to keep a thread on target you'll have to turn off your targeting computer.
However, I agree with your intent:

1) I don't have a MAME setup.
2) Street Fighter.
3) Street Fighter.
4) Quantum. This could easily be because it's so rare, though. Going a little more common I'll say Warlords.
