Title: Couple question about WG K7000
Post by: tonyh22 on May 01, 2011, 08:50:51 am
First off I have a MK2 and it has the 25K7000 (as far as I can tell by looking at the Bob Roberts monitor ID page). And the picture is very dim. I have tried adjusting the brightness to no avail. There is a picture there because I can turn the lights off in the house and you can make out the picture and play it. Would a rebuild correct this issue?

Second question, I was thinking of turning this cab into a MAME. Would I be able to just use a VGA to CGA video converter? Or would I still have to use a software to control the signals?

I have a 45" k7000 running hyperspin & misc emulators.

1. if you have played with all the adjustments on the board, neck and flyback to no avail. then I'd get a cap kit. ( and a filter cap too, if you have wobblyness. ) There is tons of good info out there on how to do that. check out http://www.youtube.com/user/varcadegames. (http://www.youtube.com/user/varcadegames.)

2. Yes you would need some sort of converter. Best would be a j-pac & soft15khz  or an i-pac & ArcadeVGA card. the first solution what I use and is cheaper, but it is supported only by certain video cards, the correct version of video drivers.

You can try bumping up the "SCREEN" control on the flyback.  This control is very touchy, so don't go turning it more than a tiny bit.  It should get a fair bit brighter, but it may not look any good.

If that doesn't help (still dim or brighter but poor image quality), the easiest thing is probably to just shotgun all the electrolytic caps on it.  If it's never been done, they're about 20 years old and probably pretty well shot.  Bob Roberts should have a cap kit.

Thanks guys, I got it from auction and have no idea if a cap kit has been done. I will just over haul the whole board.

As far as MAME goes, I will probably go with the ArcadeVGA and the Ipac if they can't get the Window 7 issues worked out with Soft 15k.

You guys are a great help to the community.

I could not get win7 to work with soft15khz with the nvidia card I had, due to the fact that it required me to use an older version of the nvidia drivers, which was not supported on windows. But win7 is overkill anyways. XP is perfect for this task. google tinyXP
