Title: The Force & The News
Post by: FrizzleFried on April 29, 2011, 08:31:05 am
My latest projects...

First...

(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa111/PapaFriz/Star%20Wars%20Upright-2nd/SWUR_JUST-HOME.jpg)  (http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa111/PapaFriz/Star%20Wars%20Upright-2nd/SWUR_JUST-HOME2.jpg)

Already ordered: Side Art + Front Art set, Repo Marquee,  Repro Yoke overlay.  It's a Star Wars and needs to be converted back.  It works... mostly.

Secondly...

When I got it the monitor was dim and there was some sprite corruption.  I rejuvenated the tube and the brightness came back.  I then bought an untested Paperboy video board for $30 shipped.  When I popped it in,  it had issues... but they were different issues than the sprite corruption I had.  I replaced the video ROM's one at a time and when I got to 6N my sprite corruption went away... W00t!

Before rejuvenation:

After rejuvenation (but before really dialing in the screen):

Here is a picture of the sprite corruption I was getting that I fixed:

Ironically this is my 2nd Star Wars upright... and my 2nd Paperboy.

May the schwartz be with you.  What $ does a SW upright like that bring after you fix it up?

I sold my last one at at a steel ($800) because I'd picked up a cockpit for a great deal and just wanted to pass along the love.

Typically a nice restored Star Wars upright will pull about  a grand with a WG or $1,200 with an Amplifone.  Of course there are variables... multi-kit,  etc...

This is a keeper this time.  I only sold the upright last time because I got the cockpit.  I sold the cockpit because I was offered a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin----ton of dough for it.  Now that I have an upright back she's STAYIN...

:)

Why does it need new side-art?

It's hard to see in the photos but the side art is pretty beat.  Maybe 6/10.  Also,  taking the ESB sticker off the one side pulled up more of the artwork...

Sweeeeeeeet! Nice grab.

You said the Star Wars mostly works, what's wrong with it?  Looks like the game's running in Attrack mode, does it not play right?

About 2" on the left side of the monitor remains blank...

Here is a video of the issue...

Well,  I confirmed that the problem is INDEED the monitor and not the PCB as it was suggested by some.  I pulled my monitor from Tempest and used it on the Star Wars and it looks fantastic.  I then tried the problem monitor in the Tempest and it shows the same issues... though in the Tempest you can only see the problem between levels during the "zoom" as the left side of the monitor where the issue is,  is at the bottom when tipped on it's side for Tempest... and Tempest only uses about 70% of the screen.... so it works out decently enough.  I still want to fix that monitor though as it has much less Tempest burn than the one that is in the SW now (it still has Tempest burn,  just not as much)... and it's bad enough that you can see the burn during the explosion scene,  etc.

UPDATE:

Star Wars side art is freakin' FUSED to the sides...

...even a 24 hour soak with soy-gel isn't getting it off.

Time to bust out the big guns.  Home Depot here I come.

Take a look at what I found when I got to the Asshat Arcade early this morning...

It seems that Paperboy got naked with with Star Wars...

...but when I left for about 20 minutes and popped back in I found this!

Looks good! Did you ever get the monitor fixed/swapped out?

Yeah.... stole my Tempest monitor.  The issue is still showing on Tempest now,  but the only time you see it is between levels during the "zoom" as Tempest has a large "black space" area toward the bottom of the vertically oriented monitor (which happens to be the "left" side of the monitor where the problem was showing).

Frizz-

Looking at your 'naked' pic reminded me that I have a question about how the control panel bolts to the bottom front of the cab. I know the metal CP has a hinge, and I always assumed that it got screwed into the top of the front coin door panel. Looking at your photo there, it looks like there is something there above the door panel that it bolts to. Is that a metal piece bolted to the back of the panel that rises up above it? Is the wooden panel rabbeted so that the hinge bolts to the wood? I'm not sure based on your photos and other ones I've seen online.

Its the front panel...but it's been routed down about 1/8"...the CP hinge attaches there.

Thanks. I was always curious how that worked.
