Title: Need Monitor or TV for Xbox Arcade Cabinet
Post by: Mrephunk on April 26, 2011, 03:35:26 am
I am making an Xbox 360 Arcade Cabinet, and I am having trouble picking out a good monitor. I was gonna go with a 24" Asus this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236049 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236049)
But now I'm not sure if its big enough. I want it to look nice. I am also looking for one with very little input lag and can support a high resolution that is Vesa mountable. I just don't know what to get. If anyone has any ideas or comments I would greatly appreciate it.

This is pretty damn close to the same monitor that I use on my pc, and its a great monitor, I think its a good option... but lets talk about this xbox 360 idea for a second :P Will this mainly be for fighting games? How will you change out the discs easily?

Its pretty much just for fighting. Gonna be a Mortal Kombat based cabinet. I am gonna have the ability to get to the xbox and am probably gonna mount the cd tray somewhere so you dont have to open the cabinet to change the discs

I would get a bigger screen, at least 27 inches.

+1 on re-mounting the dvd drive, that is what I am doing.  A couple of things you will run into:
1) The cable that goes from the drive to the xbox is proprietary and only like 4 inches long, so you are going to have to hack it.
2) If you plan in hooking the xbox up to XBL to play online, NEVER turn it on without the dvd drive being attached, and especially NEVER try to go on to XBL without a drive attached, this will flag you for ban from what I heard.
3) The eject button for the drive is wired to the motherboard, not the drive, so you need to solder a switch to the motherboard to eject the discs, or rely solely on ejecting discs through the dashboard.
4) I would hide it behind the coin door, makes it easy to swap out.  If you want to put the drive somewhere else, you are going to need some creativity.  The drive itself is ugly, not the kind of thing you want to just have out in the open.
