Day 1 of construction.
cabinet size basically the same as the widebody setup in the Dr who thread.
Using Ultra thin LED LCD Screen's, these things are really compact. less than a 1" thick total. Wanted to lay the screen down inside the cabinet rather than on top of the rails to get the correct effect.
Have routed a 1/2" slot to take the screen so that I could still use a std widebody lockbar. The back of the cabinet will have a drop down door so you can slide the screen out if required. PC will mount to a rail so can be removed or worked on from the back and allow you to leave the screen in place.
Current plan is to install full working coin mechs and cashbox as per a std setup. with hope when you open the coor door and look inside it will look just like a normal pinball.

2nd weekend spending sometime on this cab. not a lot new as I have been bouncing between projects (BBB,mini cab, home theater, honey doo's)
leg bolt holes drilled and brackets mounted
back door and computer tray made and mounted
rear cooling fans, lock and usb port mounted (nice usb port, also has speaker output so you can run your sound out to your home stereo if you wanted for even more punch!!)
saturday night built the pc and installed windows 7 and vp etc, working nice with some incredible frame rates.
almost time to move onto the backbox....

whats remaining...
1.cut glass for back glass and back paint
2.small notch on rear draw to clear inside of legs
3.install games and configure (the next painful step)lol
4.clean those nasty fingerprints off the glass..
-
Awesome.
How much did the playfield screen cost?
-
Think you can find them for around $1300 now
-
:applaud: Looking really good so far.
How heavy is that thing, make sure you have enough support, I'd throw another sawhorse under there just in case.
-
nah its not that heavy, i can pick it up unassisted. getting legs on it tonight so will be on solid ground soon :)
-
Man, I am going to have to look into this pinball thing. Great move to put the playfield below the top glass, I've seen a couple here like that and it looks great.
Question: are the tables you are going to use designed so they have depth cues, like you are seeing part of the vertical wall around the playfield projected on to the flat surface? Or do they just represent a true birdseye view of the flat play area? I don't know if I am articulating this well. I'm at work and can't come up with example pics right now.
-
Aw hell yeah! Did you get the art from Gene Cunningham? I didn't know it was available....I LOVE the look of that machine, saw one of the reproductions at pinExpo a few years ago.. beautiful retro graphics..Cant wait to see yours!

first post updated with this weeks progress.

What a fantastic looking machine! Sometimes I like seeing machines more BEFORE they are finished than when they are finished. If I see another thread like this I think that I am not going to be able to resist a visual pinball project much longer. Can't wait for more pics. Keep up the great work!!!!!

lol 'sneaks' thanks.
was the only way i could get a 46" to conform to the limits of a widebody setup. i think the final result will be outstanding.

behind on my updates,
Wiring stage begins...
ok made a little progress with wiring tonight, so here's a quick pic. time to move us along another step in the evolution of what we are doing. I am using a pinball interface board to address some of our wiring issues. right now this has all the connections for the coin door slam switch, 4 controller buttons, coin lights and coin mechs. plus the coin door open switch, flipper buttons, start button and plunger. I am going to use similar for the connections to the solenoids up front. adds a nice touch building the wiring using real pinball connectors :)
feedback installed. I made the solenoid system adjustable so I can control the amount of movement the solenoids have. This will give me the ability to adjust the sound/volume of them.
8 solenoids fitted (not all pictured, these are the right flipper and right slingshot) this will be used for flippers, slingshots and pop bumpers, plus your out holes, etc, etc.
shaker motor also fitted.
relay control board (been working on this, will see how it performs)
-
Cool move to color coordinate paint the inside of your cab. I tend to do that, even if just a quick misting coat and I thing its a sign of true craftsman, you're not just in a hurry to get the thing playing. Not everyone sees inside, but those in the know . . . they know.
-
This is a great looking build..
Oh, were I to have the parts for something like this (and the time)
-
Aw hell yeah! Did you get the art from Gene Cunningham? I didn't know it was available....
Same question... I want to make a VP cab and wanted to do the same thing as you... is the BBB art still available out there?

working with a supplier currently to get what we need. once i have done some proof of concept testing on it and any bugs are out, i'll be posting a direct link to the supplier.

ok, update time. I will go back and update post one at some point, but here's some updated pics. All wiring in the cab is now complete. now the screen is in, I need to go back and redo the temporary wiring i have on the ledwiz and ipac which is located on the underside of the pc tray.
3 RGB CREE's and 2 LED strobe lights located on backwall
real pinbal shaker motor installed in front right of cabinet (lexan cover to protect screen in case it decides it wants to say hello)
real pinball gear motor installed to inside of coin door (works a treat)
Coin door is fully operational, triggers game when you open the door and all function buttons and coin mechs are fully working. ipac shift function is enabled for when you don't want to feed it quarters.
real pinball coin door interface card installed to aid in wiring components
3 way plum bob installed for nudging
8 solenoids for feedback (lets call it a Dbox-pinball) :)
left to do......
complete ipac and ledwiz wiring (need to tidy it up and loom it)
cut backglass glass
install speaker panel
install games and configure
take rest of the year off :)

Looks beautiful! :applaud:

Couldn't agree more with everyone.
This build is incredible.
Makes me wish I had the time and money to do it.

not much of an update this week. my goal is to complete BBB this week during the evenings, this weekend was tied up with some house repairs and building a replacement cabinet for a real 70's pin for a fellow forum member.
came out nice and has me wanting to build an EM cabinet to house all those great EM tables out there... sounds like another build thread coming soon :)

Never got around to uploading the final pic. The backglass area was reworked in the end as we didn't like the spacing.
final results were much better

I'm currently refurbishing a cocktail, rebuilding a Title Fight cab to two seperate uprights, making a MAME from a photoplay cab..
This added two my two kids (2 and 4 year old) and GF, 30 year old house which needs repairs and stuff all the time..
Now, I want to make me a pin also!
Thanks a lot! :dizzy:
-
WOW! Never get tired of seeing these awesome completed projects.. :applaud:
-
The relocation of the BG monitor takes care of the one thing I liked less about the project - the big black band. That is truly great stuff.

yeah was the only downside of using the orignal decals. the backbox is so much large on the capcom. the 32" screen was a little overcome. the speaker panel was increased by an 1" to try and accomodate it also.
looking back, probably should have scanned the artwork in and reduced it and then reprinted.
Will be building another using the same decals soon, but thats going to use an original translite rather than 3 screens so will fix that problem.
