Hello all!!
This is my first post on this site and I'm having an issue with mala that hopefully one of you may be able to help me with.
In my Mala setup, I have 1 Layout for all of my emulators. I wanted to have background music while scrolling through my emulators/roms (easy right?). The problem I'm having is that when I set a background song (MP3 format), I lose sound to everything else on my pc except Mala.
As long as Mala has background music, none of my emulators/programs/internet (youtube) have sound. I have the background music stop when I open an emulator but that doesnt help. I have also Alt-tabbed out of the emulator and checked to see if my pc's volume somehow mutes but everything is turned up. I've checked Malas settings and sound is enabled and all volume is turned up. To fix this I have to go without background music but it makes my layout boring ><
Any clue what could cause this?

Hmm are you using the latest beta?
Have you tried but disable fades? Maybe the volume is not being out back up before emu launch?

Are you saying if you start mala, exit, the music will still be playing or are you using the internet while mala is running? If it is running when you exit mala then it sounds like its running somewhere else like a player. Idk thats just me rambling on. I had the problem where mala jsut stopped playing my music so i just threw an old backup in and bang it worked again. Try the latest beta or just replace your mala with a virgin version and see what happens.

well the music stops when i launch an emulator like it's supposed to. That's not the problem. It's just when I choose to use background music, I lose sound to every other program except mala. If I remove the background music, everything works fine. Rather annoying, I may just start over but yes, I am using the latest beta.
How would I go about disabling fades? I will have to look into that when I get home later...

It's an option on the Sound tab

Exactly got the same problem, and its strange, cause I use mala (1.74) on 3 different pcs (2 with windows 7, and a netbook with windows XP), but is the netbook one that gives me this problem.
The problem is just as described, if Fadein/out background music on mala is ON, during game menu all goes well, but when i start a game, mala fades music to off (windows wave on mixer stays on 0 level)..and then the game that has been recetly loaded, plays with no sound (entire windows has no sound). When you come to mala menu, fade goes up, and entire Windows has sound another time.
If i uncheck fade in/out on mala, all goes well, music on mala background, and game music works...but well, background music stops with no fade after loading a game, giving an "un-stetic" effect.

Sorry Guys,
Have not done any development of late.... :'(
I moved all the MaLa development to Windows 7 last week.
I have got VM's of Windows 98, XP, 2000 and Vista now for testing. ;D
Anyways thanks for the info, this problem sounds like a easy bug to squash now that I am aware of the scenario's in which in happens
Thanks

Sorry to thread mine but I was wondering if this problem has been resolved?
I've been using Mala 1.74 for about a year now and it's been pretty flawless. Yesterday I finally decided I wanted to try some background tunes for when I'm browsing games and I had the exact same issue the OP described. Not the end of the world if it's still unresolved, just thought I'd ask.
Thanks

Me, too. I'm going to try to uncheck the fades and see if it works.

I've got a VERY similar problem.
On my win 7 PC's the sound always behaves as it should. On my XP machines - not so good.
I did notice that on the configuration screen of my 7's it says "Volume: VOLUME DISABLED" - which is fine, as it works.
On the XP ones it says - "Master Volume (Windows Wave):". Mala resets this to 0 every time it has focus. I set the volume back to max via sndvol - but as soon as Mala has focus again - back to 0 (not to Mute).
These PC's are all running the exact same versions and settings as I copy ALL Mala and Mame directories to each one in turn.
The Mala version is 1.7.4.0.
Help! :)

Sorry for double-post - but I've fixed it (well, Loadman did really).
I've installed 1.7.4.5 - and I have the correct sounds back in the correct places :)
Gotta love Mala ;)
