Title: How to hook up bayonet leds
Post by: idsane on April 13, 2011, 02:24:49 pm
I have both 5 v and 12 v leds I want to light in my cab that are the bayonet style. I assume these have resistors in them and I want to power them in parallel off their respective PSU cable. Does anyone have a diagram from this? Does this just mean daisy chain a single power cable from the PSU to each + of each light, and do the same with the neg?

As long as you have a cable going directly from the PSU to each LED and ground, and not one cable going from each LED to the next. They have inbuilt resistors so no need to add any.

If these have built-in resistors, then you do indeed want to wire them in parallel.  You don't need dedicated wires from each one all the way back to your power supply.  You can hook all the + terminals together and hook that up to the + of your power supply and do likewise with the - terminals.

You don't want to hook the + from one to the - of another and so on - that would be a series connection.

Thanks MM. This is what I thought; daisy chain all the + then separately daisy chain all the -. I should be able to add as many as I want since these pull such low current, correct?

It should be connected like this: (you should be able to disconnect any LED at any time and it make no difference to the rest!

As many as you want within reason, yeah.  I wouldn't go over 50 or so, though even that's unlikely to be an issue.

Thanks guys! Got them hooked up and they look great. The red 5 V bayonets look great for the coin doors, and the 12V chromalight ones look cool too!
